HOPE Coventry could be your Charity of the Year - please vote for us!
Lower Precinct shopping centre has shortlisted HOPE Coventry for its Charity of the Year - but we need public votes in order to win this! To vote for HOPE Coventry, simply visit facebook.com/LowerPrecinctCoventry/posts/1488000057970934 and in the 'comments' section of this post, paste a pink love heart and 'HOPE Coventry' [you can copy and paste this '❤️ HOPE Coventry']. Winning this vote would enable us to share God's love and church unity, and to financially support our projects such as the Winter Night Shelter and Good Neighbours. Please ask your friends, communities, and congregations to vote for us. Voting closes on Sunday night.
We could never do it on our own
"Things that we could never do on our own as churches, but together, we can make a transformative difference in our city...that's what HOPE really enables." One of our trustees, who is a city church leader, summarised what HOPE Coventry means to her in this way in our new 3 minute video, below. Why not have a watch to see what Bishop Christopher and others say about us?
"There's been a really wonderful coming together of the churches in Coventry, very much in the spirit of hope." Bishop Christopher

Can you play games or pray?
Spark in the Park needs 30 more volunteers!

Spark in the Park is a free event for children and their families run by churches in Coventry, held in War Memorial Park. It provides giant inflatables, art and craft, sport and games, all free of charge. If you are free on any afternoon of 6th-8th August and could give a few hours to help children have a fun time in Coventry, see their website for more details on different ways you could help out on the day, and email darren@covcitymission.org.uk for more.

Turn fear and division into something positive - Welcome the Strangers

President Trump visits the UK on Friday 13th July. You may have strong opinions on whether this visit is a good thing. Certainly many people are alarmed when they see increasing amounts of fear and division being stirred up around the world. But rather than repaying hate with hate, why not use that energy to find a very positive and creative response?

Welcome the Strangers invite people to choose 13th July to sit down with people they would not normally spend time with – possibly someone with a quite different outlook on life. How about your elderly neighbours, or the older man at the bus stop? Or the new asylum-seekers whose culture seems so unfamiliar? Or the Christian couple who you think might judge the way you speak? Or the homeless man you pass on the way to work? For ideas on how to get started simply chatting to someone different to you, see the welcomethestrangers.org.

90 years old and finally has a friend

Ivy is 90 years old and very independent but had become lonely and isolated, suffering from depression as a consequence. She lost the confidence to go out on her own due to physical health conditions but also due to feeling very low. Thanks to Good Neighbours Coventry, Ivy now has a regular visitor once a week who takes her out of the four walls of the house to the shops. Sometimes they just sit out in the sunshine together in the garden and have a good chat and a cup of tea. Although Ivy does still struggle with depression, the difference her volunteer has made to her life is incredible. Ivy said to the volunteer "as long as you are with me, I feel safe to go out". Ivy’s volunteer said, "Ivy is a very independent and kind lady who appreciates my company. We get along great and enjoy going out and about together."

Reflections on good communication and the Diocesan Centenary

Midway through this celebration of the Diocese of Coventry turning 100, the Communications Director for the Diocese has released some ideas for godly and good communication between churches, church leaders, and the general public. Bishop Christopher has also written here about why working together in unity is important for us and our local communities in this celebration year.
When depression makes church hard

"How quickly can I leave without looking rude? Will the noise of so many people talking at once trigger a panic attack? Can I even lift my head high enough to smile at someone as I scuttle out?". Some thoughts on why church can be difficult for people with mental ill-health, and what you can do to make them feel welcome, can be found here.
