Health Service Executive Reports
The Department of Health have recently published two reports which are of
great interest.
The first report relates to Improving Home Care Services in Ireland. This involved a consultation process and was undertaken to inform the development of a statutory scheme and system of regulation for home-care services. Over 2,600 responses were received from individuals and stakeholder-organisations. The report on the findings of the public consultation was prepared by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland.
The second report relates to Personalised Budgets for People with a Disability. One of the Governments key objectives is to provide people with disabilities with services and supports which will empower them to live independent lives, provide them with greater independence in accessing the services they choose and enhance their ability to tailor the supports required to meet their needs and plan their lives. To achieve this aim, the Programme for Government provided a commitment to the establishment of a Task Force on Personalised Budgets.

Congratulations to our P-Pal Leaders - Physical Active Leaders
Una Hennessey, Paula Carroll and Lynn Conroy of Work Options are now P-PAL Leaders. The ladies have been part of the eight week P-PAL programme which aimed to enable people with intellectual disability to become physical activity leaders (PALs) in their community.
The programme took place in two locations, Ireland and Spain. The two locations were selected to enable a cross-country comparison. The programme empowered older people with intellectual disability to be more physically active, improve functional mobility and also to lead their peers in physical activity.
"It allows for the delivery of a practical programme in two different service contexts, cultural context and languages, providing a different perspective for both countries – both, however, with a shared vision of access to and participation in sport, leisure, art, cultural and other activities as a central component of how citizens with intellectual disability engage in society and achieve a sense of community belonging" Dr. Mary-Ann O’Donovan, Trinity College Dublin.
The project was in collaboration with Age & Opportunity and the University of Barcelona and led by Trinity College Dublin and Trinity Sport.
The ladies will be returning to Trinity Sports Centre in December for graduation and a sports day with all P-PAL leaders and the participants of their groups.
"I think it is a great course. It gives you confidence" Lynn Conway.
"I love being a leader. I love our sessions every Thursday" Una Hennessey.
"We made very good friends. It’s great being a leader. I now have confidence to teach a yoga class in Work Options" Paula Carroll.

A Family that opened up the world for Adult Group
Cill Bharrog Local Centre, located in Kilbarrack Dublin 5, has recently inherited a new Rodious 7 seater vehicle to transport their service users. This is a very welcomed gift as the Unit's recent vehicle just expired in June.
Sincere thank you to the Gilmore family, whom after a recent bereavement of their own son Mark donated their vehicle to ensure others within St. Michael's House services benefited.
Cill Bharrog Local Centre facilitates a day service for 13 service users most who live at home and some who live in residential services provided by St. Michael's House. Cill Bharrog Local Centre is a unit within St. Benedicts Resource centre in Dublin 5.
Transport is essential to ensure people can travel to and from their day service/home/hospital appointments and to and from outings/ activities of their choice in the local community. Public transport is used where possible but a vehicle makes it possible for all level of ability to engage in inclusive community activity .
It is a very generous and courageous donation and Cill Bharrog Manager Marie Clarke is extremely grateful. Here are the guys on holidays in Bettystown. There are many more enjoyable fun days for this vehicle to give to others. Thank you Gilmore Family.

NEW DIRECTIONS- EASI TOOL LAUNCH
The launch of the New Directions ,Evaluation, Action and Service Improvement (EASI) Tool took place recently in St. Michael’s House. Management and staff teams from Day services attended this workshop.
A tool is regarded as a measuring indicator of performance.
New Directions report 2012 was published after a review of Health Service Executive ( HSE) Day services. Day services are regarded as services used by people during day hours, mainly 9am-5pm.
New Directions will be reviewing the quality of Day services using an EASI Tool which will enable services to complete a self evaluation to check what they are doing well and what they could do better.
How the tool helps- The EASI tool was developed by the HSE to help day services complete this self evaluation. The aim of the EASI process is to produce a constructive report which will help services to maintain and improve the quality of our services. The report will generate an action plan that services can use to plan and deliver services and supports going forward.
How it works- New Directions has Interim Standards with seven themes. The Interim Standards help services do what it says in New Directions. The first three themes are about the services people receive, making sure that the supports are of good quality and safe. The last four themes are about services and staff, and value for money.
The next steps- All Day service providers have been asked to conduct a self evaluation on Theme 1 – Individualised Services and Supports. Our Staff teams will be responsible for gathering the information from all stakeholders and the timeframe for completion of the self evaluation on Theme 1 is by November 2018.
The launch allowed St. Michael's House staff to come together to discuss ideas and resources available to support with New Directions. This is a great opportunity for service teams to show their excellent work.

Our Staff recruitment drive - welcoming new members
St. Michael's House have completed two recent staff Open days in order to engage with the shortage of skills in social care workers and nursing staff. Open days were held in the north and south of the city and were deemed very successful . There were a number of interested persons already working seeking a change and an increased learning curve, others were on holiday and were seeking information to move or return to Ireland, others were seeking on behalf of daughters and sons. It was a pleasure to meet and greet potential new staff.
Our next Nurse Open Day is October 10th.
One such role is to welcome our new Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNSp) Dementia Care of Intellectual Disability (ID)who will take up her role at the end of September. The appointment is an essential element in the provision of effective, high quality, seamless integrated care for people with dementia. She will work as a member of the dementia team supporting people with dementia and their families/carers throughout their disease trajectory.
