PQM July News - 2018

A Message from the Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting
Dear Friends,
It is with great sadness that Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting marks the passing of Penny Colgan - Davis, who served our Quaker community in so many ways throughout her life.  Each person I speak to knew Penny through one or more of her countless roles of service and speaks of her friendship, warmth, wise counsel, and kindness.  Please join me, as clerk of PQM, in expressing my deep gratitude to Penny for all that she gave to each of us, and in holding her husband John and their son, Evan, in our hearts as they grieve their loss of this remarkable woman, wife, and mother.

Hollister Knowlton, Clerk, Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting (of the Religious Society of Friends/Quakers)

PQM to Host Opportunities to Learn AVP Tools
Finding ways to speak and listen about difficult issues is essential to transforming our world and communities. Alternatives to Violence Project teaches us nonviolent communication skills. The Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting is delighted to host an Introductory AVP workshop (date soon to be determined), thanks to the generous accord of the experienced facilitators .O, Carolyn Singleton, and Laurent Hahn. Also, efforts are underway to lift up this work at PYM annual sessions! Look for updates.

Meanwhile, visit the Alternatives to Violence Project to learn more about AVP, founded the ‘70’s by prison inmates and Quakers to transform people, places and situations through nonviolence training (including Philadelphia schools).

Friends General Conference in Toledo, OH - July 1-7, 2018
The theme of this year’s FGC Gathering is The Power of Truth – an invitation to explore the concept of truth in the era of “fake news.”  Among other notable speakers, the Reverend Dr. William Barber will be delivering an important address on Thursday, July 5, at 7 PM, and the talk will be live-streamed by FGC.

Details about livestreaming his address will appear on FGC's home page,  (https://www.fgcquaker.org/) in the "New and Noteworthy" section.
