Homecoming Weekend Schedule
On June 18, 2018, the Shankleville Historical Society turns 30! That’s 30 years of working alongside the Shankleville Homecoming to celebrate, document and preserve the Shankleville legacy.
The celebrations, documentation and preservation activities over the past 30 years have come about through The Society’s sponsorship of educational programs – from cemetery preservation, to the Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival Symposium, to the Youth Archeology outings with a 4-H Club in Jasper County, and of course our very first program – the Shankleville Memorial Scholarship.
We’ve also documented many of the Shankleville Family trees, and successfully added the Odom Homestead to the National Register of Historic Places. But even after 30 years, there is so much more to do!
Join us in Shankleville at this year’s Homecoming and be a part of the continuing documentation and preservation of our Shankleville legacy. Beginning in 2018, the format for the Society’s Annual Meeting will change– focusing more on encouraging every, single descendent of Shankleville to become a preservationist in ways large and small. In addition to reviewing the projects that we’ve been working on for the past year, the annual meetings will be dedicated to YOU, YOUR STORIES, and YOUR CONNECTIONS to Shankleville. So, bring your family photos – both historic and contemporary – to the Society’s annual meeting on Saturday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m. and help add to our knowledge of this important community.
Community-wide Sunday School begins on Sunday morning at 9:30, followed by the Homecoming Morning Service at 11:00 a.m. A community lunch will be served at 1:00 p.m. on the church grounds, followed by the 28th Annual Scholarship Program at 2:00 p.m.
