THE SHANKLEVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS 30!  JUNE 2018

2018 marks the 28th anniversary of the Shankleville Memorial Scholarship Program.  Through these last two and a half decades, the Society, with the help of your dollars and time, has given financial assistance to almost sixty heirs to the “Shankleville Heritage.” As in the past twenty-seven years, each student for the 2018 scholarship competition will analyze this year’s characteristic of “Dedication,” and reflect on how Dedication is an important aspect of the Shankleville legacy. Each year, the deadline for mailing the written file for the Shankleville Memorial Scholarship (application, essay, and letters of recommendation) is July 1.  Please plan accordingly for 2018.  Get details about scholarship rules and the application process at www.shankleville.org

The Shankleville Historical Society will welcome people from all across Texas to the Shankleville Community on June 23, 2018 for the Fifth Annual Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival.
Festival activities kick off at 9:00 a.m. with a number of pea-related contests including pea cooking and a pea shelling.  This year’s festival will feature a “Kids’ Zone” that will include Purple Hull Pea contests and other games, a petting-zoo and special presentations at the symposium.
Educators can earn up to 10 CPE credits at the 2018 symposium.  The subject of this year’s session is “Cool Research – Unique Texas History Processes and Projects.”
Live entertainment will be provided by the gospel group, “One Heart,” the funk-inspired “Peterson Brothers Band” and the return of “Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners.”

In addition, Shankleville descendent, Harold Odom, Jr. and Keith Stephens, member of the Deep East Texas Archeological Society will host community walking tours highlighting the restoration/ rehabilitation of the A.T. and Addie J. Odom Homestead and the ongoing archeological exploration on the property.

Homecoming Weekend Schedule

On June 18, 2018, the Shankleville Historical Society turns 30! That’s 30 years of working alongside the Shankleville Homecoming to celebrate, document and preserve the Shankleville legacy.

The celebrations, documentation and preservation activities over the past 30 years have come about through The Society’s sponsorship of educational programs – from cemetery preservation, to the Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival Symposium, to the Youth Archeology outings with a 4-H Club in Jasper County, and of course our very first program – the Shankleville Memorial Scholarship.

We’ve also documented many of the Shankleville Family trees, and successfully added the Odom Homestead to the National Register of Historic Places. But even after 30 years, there is so much more to do!

Join us in Shankleville at this year’s Homecoming and be a part of the continuing documentation and preservation of our Shankleville legacy. Beginning in 2018, the format for the Society’s Annual Meeting will change– focusing more on encouraging every, single descendent of Shankleville to become a preservationist in ways large and small. In addition to reviewing the projects that we’ve been working on for the past year, the annual meetings will be dedicated to YOU, YOUR STORIES, and YOUR CONNECTIONS to Shankleville. So, bring your family photos – both historic and contemporary – to the Society’s annual meeting on Saturday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m. and help add to our knowledge of this important community.

Community-wide Sunday School begins on Sunday morning at 9:30, followed by the Homecoming Morning Service at 11:00 a.m. A community lunch will be served at 1:00 p.m. on the church grounds, followed by the 28th Annual Scholarship Program at 2:00 p.m.

In Memoriam

In keeping with the “Memorial” in our Shankleville Memorial Scholarship Program, twenty Shankleville families collectively donated more than $100 to commemorate their loved one.  Find out more about their lives and legacies at www.shanklville.org.
