Ngā mihi a koutou katoa te whānau whanui o te Kura Pokapu o Whakatu –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

We warmly welcome this week Ava, Ophelia and Beatrix to Room 13 and farewell Unieqee who has moved into the Victory School zone and starts there this week.

We are now in the second last week of term two and looking forward to the holidays, and the opportunity to banish winter bugs, recharge and plan for next term. This is a time that I hope many of you can enjoy with your children. For those who need to work, we are very lucky to have the services of Yikes holiday programmes. Please make sure you have booked a space if you need it.

Thank you for your support in picking up children early on Friday, so that the teachers could attend a union meeting. There are huge issues in attracting and keeping great teachers right across NZ. We have an aging workforce, increasing workload and greater numbers of children requiring additional supports, but are not attracting and keeping the numbers of teachers necessary to staff our schools.  Your teachers hope that you will support them in making these concerns known to our government.

We look forward next week to our "Festival of Light." Classes have been working hard to prepare a range of displays for this. Please see below for details.

We have been very lucky in appointing some wonderful new staff to our kura next term to help with our growing roll, and to take over the reins from Sally who has a term's refreshment leave, and Neroli who has been granted a years leave to work in an international school in Fiji. We welcome Pam Speight to Te Pouahi, Bernie Inglis to Kowhai, Di Trengrove to Room 5a, and Donna Eckstein to Room 5. They will introduce themselves in the first  couple of newsletters next term. I am sure you will make them most welcome.

Finally, as the last newsletter of this term ... thank you to all of you who have gone the extra mile this term- helping with our wonderful Central Challenge, baking, help in the classroom, the garden, with sports teams, camps, transport, etc.
It takes a village to raise a child - and we have a great village!

SCHOOL REPORTS

Your teachers have been working many additional hours to prepare mid year reports in an online format that, in time, you and your child will be able to add to.

You will be given details on how to access your private site when it goes live in the last week of this term. We hope to continue to populate it over this and subsequent years with examples of your child's learning and achievement. For those that use seesaw, storypark or others, it has a similar function but will be linked more clearly to assessment and next steps learning goals.

A learning showcase - similar to last years student-led sessions - will be held early next term (2 August), and, as usual, if you would like a time to speak with your child's teacher about a specific issue or query  please let them know.

We are proud of the progress your children have made so far, and we know you will be too.

Learning Showcase - 2 August

Bookings will be open from next Monday for week 2 next term.
Book your time here to come and hear your child share their learning over the previous two terms.
You will need to use the code  8mwds
Coming Up:

The Nelson Central School Disco is this week! It’ll be another fun one this year with great music and lots of dancing.

It is on Friday 29 June from 5.30-7pm for the Year 0-2 and 7-8.30pm for Years 3-6 at the Masonic Hall on Nile Street.

Tickets are $2 each and sales will be held at school
from 25-29 June before and after school.

Grab a raffle ticket (or few) at the same time for $2 each. The prizes include a 3 month membership with 3 personal training sessions at Miki D’s Gym, a term’s swimming lessons with Swim Magic, and The Wax Bar vouchers!

*Please note all children need to be accompanied by an adult to and at the disco*

We need baking donations (sweet and savoury) as dancing is hungry work. We ask that odd numbered rooms please provide savoury baking, and even numbered rooms provide sweet baking. Baking can be dropped off at school with your son(s)/ daughter(s).

This year we want to encourage the children to use their own water bottles instead of using cups.
We will be collecting each classes water trays before the disco and will have them at the water table during the disco for kids to come and help themselves. So I need to ensure that the children either leave their bottles in their water tray on Friday or they bring it along to the disco.

Using Language Symbols and Texts is the last of the 5 Key Competencies and will be our focus for the final 2 weeks of this term. This competency is about the different ways to communicate and understand information, experiences and ideas. This includes basic skills of literacy and numeracy, but is much more.  It’s about how children make meaning of things, based on what they already know, or think they know, and their experiences and beliefs.

Things to try at home
  • If your child is struggling with a word in their reading book encourage them to look at the picture, to look for words hiding inside words e.g. the word ‘and’ is hiding in ‘sand’ , to chunk words up e.g. look + ing,  or to listen for rhyming words e.g. cat, hat, mat. Traditional Nursery Rhymes are a fun way to play with rhyme.
  • Encourage your child to use imaginative play. It is amazing the number of different things a sheet and a couple of chairs can represent in the eyes of a 5 year old.
  • Create something together with your child and model for them the language of sharing ideas and negotiating outcomes.
  • Look at road signs and other signs using pictures when you are out and about. Talk about how traffic lights use the symbol of green for go, red for stop.
  • When cooking talk to your child about different measures you are using e.g. millilitres, grams, spoons, cups. Have a go at making playdough together and using this language.
  • Capturing your child’s learning and play through videos, photos or voice recordings.
  • Playing board games, card games or dominoes.

Listen to the great language of negotiation going on between this group during  Play Based Learning time.
Pohutukawa News

Room 9 are lucky enough to have weekly sessions run by No Child Left Inside and we love to learn fundamental skills with Ryan.  Here we are playing some fun games with the football and basketball, learning how to control the ball and avoid it being stolen by the opposition.

Room 8 has been doing descriptive writing. Here are some examples from our descriptions of a sunny beach scene.

Salty air filtered through my nose. A screech fills my ears as waves pound against  the rocks. The cold air ruffles the seagulls’ feathers as they squawk overhead. The waves thunder against the shore.
Daisy Room 8

My nose is like a vacuum cleaner sucking up the salty air, its high tide and the water is splashing against the red boulders I am standing behind. The water is crushing the tiny rocks. The sky is as bright as heaven.
Alyssa Room 8

Waves look like daredevils crashing on the beach.  Pebbles roll like crabs back and forward with the water.
Seth Room 8

I love to smell the fresh air. I would like to swim with the waves crashing onto the beach. As I am walking through the smooth brown rocks, crunching footsteps at my feet. The sun shines brightly.
Walter Room 8

Shells shine at my pupils as I walk. The sand gets colder and colder. The squawking seagulls search for food. The bubbling water refills the crunchy shells. Each grain of sand gets taken away by the spreading water. I feel the slimy seaweed under my feet. Crabs scuttle away to their rock pools and mussel shells sparkle like the stars.

What a thrill it has been to explore our theme of space this term. From researching the vast scale of space to designing bases to colonise various planets throughout the galaxy, our learning has taken us to infinity, and beyond!

Enviro Update!
A selection of wonderful Enviro Agents are holding Bees Wax Wrap making workshops in Room 12 on Friday lunchtimes. These will be run while there is interest. Children are invited along to either revamp their old wraps or to make a new one!
Our school would love to be plastic free so please encourage your children to take up this opportunity!
It is alarming walking around on duty and seeing the amount of waste the children's lunch boxes are making and what we are sending to a landfill for the next few thousand years!
Some more information regarding rubbish free lunch boxes are included in this newsletter please take the time to read it.
School Community Group:

The SCG would love some new members. We know there are lots of parents out there who have something new to contribute to our group, maybe from a previous school experience, another culture, or a unique workplace viewpoint. We are definitely under-represented by parents of new entrants, Te Pouahi parents and international parents.

The group meets once or twice a term, mainly to organise fun/fundraising events which directly benefit your child/ren, and it is a very fun group of teachers and busy parents just like you. Events like the Central Challenge, the Central Crank (mountainbike mini-race) and the Disco are heaps of fun to organise with a good team of people involved; there are lots of different roles that involve as much or as little time as you can afford. If you are on the fence about whether or not to join, just come along to our next meeting on Tuesday 3rd July at 7pm in the library and get a feel for what it’s about.

Email this address with any questions, or just show up!

Have you had your say about education?  It's important that everyone with a role in supporting learning has the chance to contribute to the work the Ministry is doing to focus on progress and achievement across the curricula.  They want to hear from you - students, parents, whānau, iwi and communities, so they can make sure the work reflects your views.  Go to the online survey at https://conversation.education.govt.nz/ before the end of July to participate and to find out more information.
