Quietly getting on with the job
Much of our recent work with Touching Base has been quietly going on in the background. We have been busy writing several grant applications and we are also close to going live with the CIVICRM software we have been installing to better manage membership matters, targeted communications and other administrative functions.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY AWARDS for sex worker activists
What a remarkable week for the two jurisdictions where sex work has been decriminalised. Not that either system is perfect. Both New Zealand & New South Wales models of decriminalisation have flaws yet to be remedied, but nevertheless it is fantastic that the work of these two amazing women is being recognised at such high levels.

We have also been applying for various NDIS and other grants to fund projects such as the 2nd edition of our Policy and Procedure guide for disability service providers, and to employ a part-time database manager and part-time referral list officer to expand our capacity to provide referrals for people with disability and their support staff et cetera.

Service Provider Awareness Training SPAT
Since the introduction of the NDIS we have noted a significant decrease in the number of participants at our training workshops for disability service providers. There has certainly been a change across the sector with demand for training not directly related to the NDIS being affected. We have even heard that one large disability service organisations has stopped sending staff to external training courses. Low registration rates have meant that we’ve had to cancel our last two Service Provider Awareness Training workshops.
We still have two Service Provide Awareness Training workshops planned in different locations in NSW in 2018.

Professional Disability Awareness Training PDAT

However demand for our Professional Disability Awareness Training workshop for sex workers is stronger than ever. Rachel Wotton’s recent overseas trip funded by her Churchill Foundation award means that Touching Base is in a great position to further develop training for sex workers. We look forward to that being a one of our key areas to focus on in the near and medium-term.
Sex workers wanting to get advanced notice of the next workshops in other locations, or who want to go on our waiting list, please email us via info@touchingbase.org

EXCITING NEW RESOURCE PROJECT
FundAbility is brought to you by Northcott and funded by the NSW Department of Family and Community Services
This month we’re excited to announce we have been awarded a grant by FundAbility Northcott for a project to develop a new communication book to facilitate conversations about accessing a sex worker for people who use augmentative and adaptive communication systems.
We look forward to adding to the targeted resources we have developed for adults with disability wanting to see a sex worker. This project will hopefully lead to another funded project to turn the hardcopy communication book into a digital app which could be made available on our website to anybody for a small fee. This will help us to create a more sustainable future for Touching Base as we provide a low-cost option for people with disability, organisations and sex workers around the world who could make good use of this new resource.
We hope you’ll be able to join with us to celebrate when we launch the new communication book. We will be giving people plenty of notice once the launch details are confirmed.
