With summer upon us and the worship service time changing to 9:30am, Grayce is working with our musicians and singers to see what works best for them and the summer worship services.  Anyone interested in sharing their gift of music can contact Grayce at music@debowsumc.org.  Currently, the choir rehearses on Fridays at 5:00pm and the band practices on Fridays at 6:00pm.  Please check the church website calendar for any exceptions or changes to this schedule.
You may have noticed an improved (and more robust) sound from our organ and keyboard.  This is due to three new speakers and amplifiers recently installed in our sanctuary.  We are grateful to Resurrection Lutheran church in Hamilton Square, NJ for this very generous donation of this audio equipment.  The speakers/amplifiers are totally compatible with our existing organ, since they were made by the same manufacturer.  We would also like to thank Gordon Gunzelman, who not only installed the equipment for just the cost of the cable, but for also making us aware that the equipment was available for donation from Resurrection Lutheran.  Gordon has maintained our organ in recent years.
Please keep the following people in your prayers . . .

Rudy Iannacone; Dean Sparling; Chris Bitondo; Edith Gutwein; Jamie Gray; Anthony Giarratano; Chase McKinney; Betty Barrentine; Janet Kittstein (Sue’s mother); Ron Calub (Santillo’s); Susan Turner (Linda’s Close Friend); Jim Armstrong; Jane Mills; Faith Tyler (depression, granddaughter of Ed and Karen); Kara (diagnosed with cancer); Barry Odell (Donna’s friend); Ruth Hammond (friend of Cheryl Barrentine); Paul Bartek; Hong (Lynn Sparling’s friend with cancer); Jon Brysceynski; Joan Macrina; Jackie Zimmerman (Santillo’s friend); Dawn (Lynn Sparling’s friend, car accident); Harold (Donna’s Son); Dottie; Jim West; Emiline (leukemia); Lora Disporto & Family; the Savoca & Ridge families; Steven Gray (Guy's son); the family of Debbie Sidorakis, as we mourn the tragic passing of our GNJUMC Central Regional Administrative Assistant; Pastor Betty & Family (death of her grandson, Jacob Gibbons).

To add or remove names from this prayer list, please contact the pastor at pastor@debowsumc.org.  Midweek prayer chain requests can be emailed to prayer@debowsumc.org.  All prayer requests go directly to the pastor.

 Seeking

Housekeeping Job

Frances Hartley has been coming to our church for the past few months.  She is in need of housekeeping employment.  She is willing to work any hours at a very reasonable rate and will clean windows, scrub floors, etc.  She will need transportation and has no phone.  If you can use her services or know of someone who can use them, please contact her any Sunday before or after the worship service or contact Anita at 848-373-9304.

Looking for
Pop-Up Canopies
DeBows is looking to procure three 10x10 pop-up canopies to support some proposed outdoor events at the church.  If you or anyone you know would like to donate a new or gently used canopy, or would otherwise like to make a financial contribution toward purchase, please contact Sue Hayward in church or at jerseysue@outlook.com.

DeBows Worship

If you are involved with the Altar Guild or are in the rotation to serve during a worship service, you can view information for an upcoming Sunday by visiting the DeBows Worship Planner calendar from the church website main menu: CALENDARS/DeBows Worship Planner.  Here you can see worship information for any given Sunday, including:
  1. Liturgical color for paraments
  2. Lectionary readings
  3. Ushers
  4. Lay Reader
  5. Communion Steward
  6. Offering Counter
  7. Special events/notes if applicable for that Sunday
The DeBows Pathfinders will be taking a break for the summer and will resume hiking in September.  There is some discussion about arranging a leisurely "summer stroll" somewhere during the summer and information for that event will be posted on the church website once finalized.  You may also view some pictures from the last hike at Baldpate Mountain on the church website blog. You may contact Wayne Ervin for more information about the DeBows Pathfinders group.

As a summer mission initiative, we have decided to support the Children’s Home Society of New Jersey’s “Formula for Hope” campaign.  To facilitate this, we are distributing empty baby bottles. If you wish to participate in this outreach program, please take one or more  bottles home and over the summer put loose change in them (or cash or checks).

Your spare change could mean the world to a baby in need. It will support over 50 life saving programs and services that CHSofNJ provides throughout New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.  It will make a meaningful difference in the lives of at-risk babies and children in our community.  Every penny counts, and even the smallest amount can make a BIG difference toward the mission of saving children’s lives and building healthy families.

We will collect the filled baby bottles soon after Labor Day and count the money.  The proceeds will be sent to the Children’s Home Society.  Thank you for your support of this outreach activity.  You may contact Anita at 848-373-9304 for more information.

Finance Status Report

The following is a high level status summary of DeBows 2018 finances as of 5/31/2018.

Income
$33,817  YTD

Expenses
$44,996  YTD

Deficit
($11,179)

In the month of June, we received a stock dividend of $2624 and are anticipating an increase in our Wespath account of about $1200.  These items will help reduce the deficit, but we will also need your help. We thank you for your faithful support as the church works to reduce the deficit as the year progresses

If you are looking for an easy way to make your financial contributions or to otherwise stay connected while you are away on vacation, we invite you to support the ministries and programs of DeBows UMC by using our online giving option found on the church website at www.debowsumc.org.

Just click on the “Online Giving” button found in the church website footer.  This will permit you to donate online using the church’s secure PayPal account and your credit card.  You do not need to have a personal PayPal account to participate.  As always, donations to the church are tax deductible and will be reflected in your year-end giving statement from DeBows UMC.  Thank you for your faithful support.
DeBows UMC
2nd & 4th Monday Each Month

The DeBows Food Pantry is a tangible and meaningful way we share God’s love with our community.  It is open the 2nd & 4th Monday each month from 6:00-8:00pm.  If you would like to volunteer time to support this ministry, please see the sign-up sheet outside of Fellowship Hall.  You may contact Deb Cregle for more information.  The next Food Pantry distribution is Monday, July 9.

Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either Shoprite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Marilyn Allerton to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

On Wednesday, July 4, the United States celebrates Independence Day.  Here are some fun facts about this national holiday.
  1. Jackson Township will observe Independence Day with a community event at Johnson Park on Saturday, July 7 between 3:00-8:30pm.  Click here for detailed information.
  2. July 4th was not declared an (unpaid) holiday for federal workers until 1870, nearly 100 years after the nation was founded.  It did not become a paid holiday until 1938 and was finally declared an official federal holiday in 1941.
  3. Three US presidents have died on July 4 — John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe. In the case of Adams and Jefferson, both died within a few hours of each other on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
  4. The oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States is the 4th of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island; it began in 1785.
  5. John Adams advocated celebrating Independence Day on July 2nd because that is the day when the Continental Congress actually voted for independence.  However, the representatives from the 13 American colonies ratified the Declaration of Independence on July 4th and that is the date that became associated with the event.
  6.  On July 4,  1776, the Declaration of Independence document was printed. Only the president of Congress, John Hancock, and the secretary of Congress, Charles Thompson, signed the final draft on that day.  Most of the remaining 54 signatures, from representatives from all 13 colonies, were added on August 2, 1776.
  7. The tradition of fireworks on July 4th began in 1777, on the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Today, America imports over $257 million worth of fireworks each year, mostly from China.
