OUTBACK FUTURES NEEDS YOUR HELP THIS EOFY

“After relocating to the Barcaldine township over 18 months ago, we have been privileged to receive support from the amazing group of people at Outback Futures.  Our specialist has taken such care in getting to know our son and puts so much thought into each lesson ensuring it is engaging and fun, but all while achieving maximum learning potential. The improvement we have seen is out of sight and this has had a flow on effect throughout our entire family.”

OUTBACK FUTURES HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE HEARD
“People and organisations who know their why, enjoy greater, long term success, command greater trust and loyalty among employees and customers and are more forward thinking and innovative than their competition”. Simon Sinek. Find your why
Being forced to express your ‘why’, your difference, and your needs clearly, succinctly and yet with the passion you feel so deeply, is a challenge well worth going through. I was given the task of doing just that as we found ourselves with the opportunity of putting our case to the Prime Minister in a brief interview in Blackall recently.

For Outback Futures the why is based on relationship! It is all about seeing equity in service provision for rural and remote communities…  Not just equity in quantity, but equity in terms of options and opportunity. It is about genuinely connecting with and valuing our Outback Family, and helping them to develop the boldness of voice to advocate clearly and loudly for who they are, their well-being, and the vital role they play in the fabric of Australian life.
Mobilising communities around mental health and well-being; Bridging the gap between ‘people who do not want to cross a shop front for help’ and the established services, and offering an unrestricted and safe first experience of help seeking are the way we go about our why.

I challenge you to ask yourself about your personal and business 'why'. I am inspired by Simon Sinek when he challenges us to consider that if we feel uninspired in what we are doing, then we need to become the leader/partner or colleague that we wish we had.

CLINIC UPDATE
The first six months of 2018 have seen a huge load of clinics and referrals for Outback Futures. We have completed an engagement process in both Blackall-Tambo and Longreach and delivered five full clinics across the Barcaldine, Blackall-Tambo and Longreach areas.

We have made so many new and fantastic connections and also deepened relationships that have been forming across the last couple of years. The Outback Futures team feel very privileged to be working alongside such amazing communities.

Our workload is sufficient to dispel any myths around the mental health need or allay any fears about being ‘alone in your struggles’. For every two to three days of
face to face clinic, we do between 75-85 individual appointments, plus group work and presentations.

This is exciting, not because it speaks to ‘lots of people with issues’ but because it reveals the how normal it is to be dealing with life and its struggles and how normal it should be to connect with someone who can help you process those struggles for a few sessions and then hopefully support you to move on better equipped and more robust. At the same time we are also creating a culture for our children that help seeking is normal and useful.

Thank you for welcoming us so warmly. We are looking forward to engaging with Winton in July and seeing you all again in the second half of the year.
Team Profile: Adrienne Miller
Adrienne has spent most of her married life living in North Queensland with her husband and daughters, where they owned a small business. Her interest in Outback Futures resulted from her personal experience of having to move to Brisbane temporarily to access medical care for different members of her family. Whilst being displaced presented many challenges, it also became the motivator for wanting to help others who don’t have access to many services offered in the city.
Adrienne has completed a Bachelor of Social Science (counselling), Graduate Certificate in Bereavement counselling and interventions as well as an Advanced Diploma in Counselling and Family Therapy. Furthermore, Adrienne has a special interest in supporting individuals, couples and families experiencing palliative care and grief and loss as a result of her own personal experiences and involvement with SIDS and the Leukaemia Foundation.

We are so excited to have her on the team!
Mind Matters: Anxiety - the often unrecognisable foe
The heavy weight in the pit of your stomach, the sweaty palms, the pumping heart and the general sense of feeling unwell... Can all point to the presence of anxiety in your life. A presence we are often not aware of, yet a presence that can be quietly impacting so much of how we think about and react to every day events and interactions.

We often think about Australians dying of heart attacks and dementia, but mental health issues are really taking a toll on our young people. A new Australian Institute of health and welfare report reveals that anxiety disorders are the leading cause of ill health and even death in girls and women aged 5 to 44.

In small children anxiety can begin manifesting in physical symptoms such as headache, tantrums, or even refusing to go to school. As parents we can sometimes be dealing with physical
symptoms in our children not realising they are emotionally based.

The stigma still associated with anxiety still greatly impacts people’s willingness to seek help, believing it is an indication of weakness or not realising the debilitating impact that anxiety can have on someone’s ability to do life well…. even small children.

Don’t be afraid to take the step and ask the question... At the very least it opens the door for conversations in the family around how our feelings and thoughts can impact our lives and how talking to someone about that should be as natural as getting advice about an aching ear or broken limb.

If you have any concerns about anxiety in yourself or someone you are close to, email info@outbackfutures.org.au or call 0417703729.
