The main story -

HMRC collected a record £5.3bn in inheritance tax in the year to February 2018
Inheritance tax, the so-called 'voluntary' tax continues to grab the headlines. This month HMRC has revealed it is collecting record-breaking amounts of inheritance tax, up by 13% on the previous period.

Inheritance tax is often referred to as a voluntary tax because there are many ways to reduce or even eliminate the burden of it. Inheritance tax is regarded by many as unfair and yet large numbers of people fail to take even the most basic steps to limit the impact it can have on family assets. 
The freeze on the main IHT threshold which has kept it at £325,000 per person has resulted in more families being caught by the inheritance tax trap. As property values have continued to rise and more people draw money from their pension pots when they reach 55 the risk of leaving an estate on death over the IHT threshold has increased.
