June 2018

Dear friends,

We have much to report from this last quarter. This month the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) continues to make an impact on policy at a national and international level and we've delivered some truly world-class events. Our path-breaking series on public value at the British Library continues: We’ve had three brilliant talks—from Stephanie Kelton on why a government budget is not a family budget, Jayati Ghosh on the public value of care work and yesterday evening Lucy Musgrave gave an inspiring talk on the unruly subject of urban neighbourhoods. If you’ve missed any of the talks—or want to relive any of them—they are available on our YouTube playlist or directly via the series website. Due to popular demand, we have released more tickets for RIBA Stirling Prize winning architect Amanda Levete’s talk on September 4th on why public spaces matter. You can book here.

IIPP is having an impact at the highest levels of government. Our commission for Mission-Oriented Innovation and Industrial Strategy (MOIIS) received praise and recognition from UK Prime Minister Theresa May as she launched the Government’s four strategic missions in May. MOIIS, which uses mission-oriented thinking to transform the Grand Challenges outlined in the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy into tangible 'missions', is a panel of leading experts on major societal challenges. It is based on the work we have done for the EU on defining a mission-oriented approach to innovation policy. We also brought together an international line-up of experts in an event at the UK Parliament to create a more direct dialogue between the Government’s Patient Capital Review and its Industrial Strategy—through the framework of IIPP’s mission-oriented approach.

I’m also delighted to announce that IIPP has joined forces with the Rockefeller Foundation to work with our Mission-Oriented Innovation Network (MOIN), and support our broader aim to provide the public sector with a more dynamic toolkit based on the shaping and co-creating of markets—not only fixing. The Rockefeller Foundation will be funding two new MOIN-related positions at IIPP that will play an important role in creating a cutting-edge blue print for the future of policy making. Please do circulate the news to any potential applicants, and you can find out more here.

With very best wishes,
Mariana Mazzucato
