Spice Notes : World Spice Merchants

Street food is an important part of India’s food culture, and Chai, Chaat & Chutney features some of the author's favorite street foods from the four corners of India. Some will recognize author Chetna Makan's name from The Great British Bake Off in 2014, where she was a semi-finalist, or her gorgeous first cookbook, The Cardamom Trail, which celebrated baking with Indian flavors. For her second cookbook, she went back home to India to take inspiration from the street. This gorgeous cookbook has five chapters, one for each of  the cities that inspired the recipes, as well as an entire chapter devoted to various chutneys and masalas that will enhance any dish.

If you love Indian food, but have never tried cooking it at home before, this is an excellent introduction. The recipes are designed with the home cook in mind, with vibrant photographs that will make your stomach growl, as well as stories and explanations of the subtle differences in each area and each dish.

***Please note the change of date and venue. We will be having this Meet & Eat on July 11th instead (since the 4th is the first Wednesday), and it will be at the Atrium Kitchen at Pike Place Market. It's one level below DeLaurenti's, and very easy to find. You'll love it there!***

We're excited to do an incredible cookbook from the Pacific Northwest in August. Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables won the 2018 James Beard Award for Best Book in Vegetable-Focused Cooking and was named a Best Cookbook of the Year by the Seattle Times, Bon Appetit, Eater, the Wall Street Journal, and numerous others. Authored by Joshua McFadden of Ava Gene's in Portland, Oregon, has developed an appreciation for understanding vegetables and how to get the best flavor out of them at any stage.

In Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables, he highlights how vegetables evolve throughout their growing seasons, starting from Spring, Summer (early to mid to late), then Autumn, and finally Winter. Each chapter starts out with raw vegetables at the start of their season, then progressively using heat - grilling, steaming, braising, roasting, sautés, and stews. This cookbook celebrates flavor at its peak, and will be one that you'll go back to again and again for its creativity, ingenuity and just plain delicious dishes. We dare you to not have your stomach growl when looking at the photos...
