The Information and Systems (Engineering) ECP has been busy hosting a variety of workshops, sorting through ECP Capability Development Funding applications, and preparing for the next round of VC fellows.

In this newsletter, I've included information about the workshops that have run as well as an invite to one happening next week. Congratulations to Luke Wallace and Du Yong Kim who have been recently appointed as Vice Chancellor's Fellows. They are both aligned with the ISE ECP. More details about them included in this issue.

I'll be leaving for the US on 5 July to attend the
The 41st International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval in Michigan to present a paper and host a panel session.

I'm interested in keeping up with your research activities, successes, outcomes and the like. If you have some news that you'd like to include, let us know. Contact details is provided in this newsletter.

We're always encouraging RMIT staff to become an ECP affiliate by registering their details. There'll be a link to access the registration form at the end of this newsletter.

Cheers for now,

Mark Sanderson

RMIT SPACE Symposium
Monday, 9 July 2018: 10.05.89

We would like to extend our warmest invitation to you to join us at the RMIT SPACE (Satellite Positioning for Atmosphere, Climate and Environment) Research Centre Symposium.

Date: Monday, 9 July 2018
Time: 10 am to 2 pm (registration opens at 9:30 am)
Venue: 10.05.89 (Garden Building. Stairs & lift access from Bowen Street)

The aim is to bring together researchers within the School of Science and beyond to share and learn about our research interests and capabilities in space science, technology and applications, e.g., space situation awareness, space weather, atmospheric modelling, satellite navigation technology, modern geodesy etc. There will also be networking opportunities during morning tea and lunch. So far we have lined up eight exciting talks by academics and research staff; and a HDR session for students to showcase their research.

To attend the symposium, please register your details by completing the Google registration form by Thursday 5 July.

We would been keen to connect with researchers/academics in
  • data and sensors
  • automation and intelligence
For space and atmospheric science/physics including space junk monitoring, autonomous and trusted systems for driverless cars. Communication is another area of interest for augmented precise satellite navigation.

The four areas of the SPACE Centre research:
  • Space situational awareness - The Centre has expertise in accurate monitoring of space environment using precise orbit determination techniques, debris surveillance and satellite-based technologies.
  • Space weather and atmospheric modelling - A key focus of the Centre is to model the nuances and chaotic pattern systems in the atmosphere and space that are an integral part of space weather, climate science, environmental monitoring and precise positioning.
  • Satellite navigation and modern geodesy - The Centre conducts research in modern geodesy, developing new algorithms to provide precise and fit-for-purposes positioning, navigation and timing information using GNSS technology to new business applications and services.
  • Integrated and cooperative positioning - The Centre undertakes research in integrated and cooperative positioning focusing on multisensor systems to support intelligent transportation systems and smart people and object mobility. It also focuses on alternatives/backups to GNSS technology.

Please contact A/Prof Suelynn Choy (email: suelynn.choy@rmit.edu.au ) if you need any further information.

Workshops/Information Sessions

Many thanks to Jeffrey Chan, Tao Gu, and Xiaodong Li for organising a series of workshops and information sessions in June. The AI Symposium, IOT workshop, and a Data61 information session were run and were well attended. Speakers from across the university presented their work.

The ECPs
ECP Capability Development Fund

Congratulations to the following researchers whose ECP CDF applications were successful.

The Activity, 'ABM Hack: an interdisciplinary and cross-institutional hackathon for large-scale urban simulation' will be jointly led by Dr Jonathan Arundel (Global, Urban and Social Studies) and Dr Dhirendra Singh (School of Science). They were awarded $9,000.

Professor Andy Ball and Dr Sarvesh Soni (School of Science) were awarded $8,637.00 for their Activity, 'Development of a market ready Citizen Science mobile App for citizen scientists to collect and analyse big data sets'.

'Towards ecological bushfire management models' is a workshop Activity that Associate Professor Marc Demange (School of Science) will be leading with $8330 awarded in funding.

Dr Mahdi Jalili, Dr  Peter Sokolowski, Dr Lasantha Meegahapola and Dr Arash Vahidnia (School of Engineering) were awarded $9000 for their Activity, 'Focused workshop on Designing Next-Generation Smart Power and Energy Systems'

Associate Professor Paul Ramsland's (School of Science) collaborative Bio/CS activity on 'Glycoinformatics of “worm” infection in Southern Bluefin Tuna' was awarded $10,000.

Meet our new 2018 Vice Chancellor's Fellows

Dr Luke Wallace 2018 Vice Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Luke's current research area include Fuels3D.
This is a smartphone based method to map and
monitor wildfire hazard. His research also looks
at Urban forest structure reporting from
remote sensing as well as active fire detection
from remote sensing
satellites.

His research capabilities are in 3D remote sensing
and computer vision; Satellite remote sensing; Big
data processing and machine learning; Image data
integration; and Object based analysis.

Luke's career aspirations include a continued path of
building his expertise  3D remote sensing research
andto see the tools, methods and approaches I develop
applied in real world problems.

Away from the world of work and research, Luke is
interested in Japanese carpentry and football.

Dr Du Yong Kim, 2018 Vice Chancellor's Research Fellow

Dr Kim’s main research is real-time data processing
based on statistical signal processing for computer
vision and robotics application, with a focus on stochastic
filtering theory (Kalman filtering, Sequential Monte Carlo
method), data fusion technique. Specific research topics
that Kim works on include the development of robust
filtering algorithms to handle uncertainties in large-scale
stochastic dynamic models and data fusion for large-scale
networks and object detection in image observation via
feature extraction based on machine learning.

He is currently working on the following computer vision
and biomedical image analysis research projects.
1. Development of Visual Multi-Target Tracking Algorithms
using Random Finite Set Approach (funded by the
Ministry of Science, ICT and Future
Planning, South Korea; and
2. Multi-object estimation for  live-cell microscopy, (ARC),
Discovery Project. For more information on Kim's research
areas and interests, click here.

Communications Team, R&I

Welcome to Michael Quin, Senior Communications Advisor at R&I.

Michael Quin has recently been appointed as Senior
Communications Advisor with R&I. He is keen to find
about the research happening across RMIT, including
currentprojects (big or small), upcoming publications,
items of interest or public/media issues you have
expertise to comment on. Where  Michael sees
potential for interest from a general audience he can
help promote the work via media, social media or the
RMIT website. While he won't be able to assist in every
case he is interested in being spammed about what's
happening until he's more familiar with the research
capabilities and the opportunities that exist. Send
your information to Michael by clicking here.

The R&I Communications Team conduct media training and coaching and Michael is available to come and speak to research groups about these opportunities. To arrange this with Michael, you can contact him by email by clicking here.
