The conference is a nice mix of long and short presentations from both local Icelanders doing crazy things and industry experts from abroad. Our next speaker comes from Iceland 🇮🇸, but spent a lot of time in the Netherlands 🇳🇱.

Björn Steinar is an Icelandic designer who takes a closer look at all the waste we produce on a daily basis. From food waste to plastic, he explores ways we can do better. His most recent project, Catch of the day, is fighting food waste one vodka bottle at a time.

Food waste is a severe problem on a global scale with no solution in sight due to fluctuations in production and demand. Fermentation and distillation of leftover fruits prolong the “best before” date to infinity; since alcohol over 23% can never go bad. Each batch is carefully crafted using discarded fruits, picked up from local importers, farmers or dumpsters.

Björn will get us thinking about all the physical waste we are producing as part of the Web and what we can do about it!

Björn Steinar's fight against food waste has lead him to Open Sourcing his designs so everyone can do their part in the struggle.

What a line-up!

This is going to be an exciting event. Along with Björn Steinar, we have Nina Walia discussing interactive textiles and surfaces, Matt Jones explaining his use of Artificial Intelligence in problem solving and Charlotte Dann talking about her work closing the analog and digital loop through the digital to physical creation of jewellery.

Short Days & Long Nights

We had a look at the solar chart for November 16th, and it will be a short day in deed! With less than 6h of sun, the conference will start before we see the morning sun and end roughly as it disappears from view. What that does mean, is there is over 17h of time to get a glimpse of the northern lights.

Watch this space!

Over the next few weeks we'll continue to announce speakers. Be sure to have a look into flights and accommodations now, while things are cheap. This year's Material Conference will be Friday, November 16th. This late in the year we see more darkness than light, but the tradeoff is that cool, clear nights are ideal to see Northern Lights!
