Dear Supporters,

with only 6 months left of the year we cannot believe what we have achieved as the KAWS team.  We decided to not only give feedback on stories and events this month, but also to remind you of how important each and every supporter is to us. We implemented new projects, and started informational campaigns to share some hard hitting but very vital statistics with you.
We had a very busy month, not only reflecting on the fires from a year ago, but also celebrating the opportunities to assist animals with our various projects that have received such an amazing amount of support.
So sit back and enjoy
Pawfully yours.
PLEASE TAKE OUT OR RENEW YOUR KAWS MEMBERSHIP AND RECEIVE DISCOUNTS

As an NPO the Knysna Animal Welfare Society needs a strong membership base to ensure its continued sustainability. Supporters, through memberships and donations, are the backbone of KAWS.
Our membership numbers have been dwindling in recent years at a time that demands on our services are higher than ever. Winters are very rough on many animals in the poorer communities and the current economy is making this season tougher than ever for us. With your support we can continue to make a difference to the welfare of animals in our area.
Please consider signing up as a member – there are no obligations to play an active role, but if you want to also offer some of your time to assist in any of the numerous areas that volunteers help us you are welcome to do so.
The current KAWS annual membership fee is only R100. If there is a specific project that you want your membership funds to be directed to you can choose which one of the following is closest to your heart and we will ensure that 100% of your membership fee is used for this cause:

1. STERILISATION: to help pay for sterilisation of pets whose owners cannot afford private veterinary fees.
2. MEDICAL CARE: to help pay for the treatment of injured and diseased animals whose illness or injuries would probably not be treated without our help.
3. VACCINATIONS: to assist with disease breakout in communities.

LIFE membership is a once-off donation of R2500 and supports all important funding needs.

Signing up to be a member, or renewing your membership, will mean that you will not only support your heartfelt cause, but you will also receive discounts of 10% off selected KAWS organised events and our annual KAWS calendar.
You will also receive a proudly sponsored bumper sticker and our regular newsletter with updates – no more than 1 mail per month – and you will be entitled to attend our annual AGM and have your voice heard if you so wish.
Once you have signed up as a member, your membership card will be available from our office in 1 Marlin Road, Hunters Home Knysna. For more info please call
044 384 1603.
Why consider becoming a member? Because at the end of the day, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ANIMALS and you can make a difference!
Animal lover leaves €1 million to dog that saved his life
Photo: CATERS/WW.MAGAZINEFEATURES.CO.ZA
An animal lover changed his will to leave €1 million to his pet dog after the poodle saved his life when he had a heart attack.
Pasquale Rizzo (90) left everything he owned to his beloved pet dog who raised the alarm by barking after he suffered a heart attack in Milan, Italy.
The grateful pensioner didn’t want his best friend, a fluffy white pooch called Tor, to end up in a dog shelter when he died.
So he wrote up a will so the dog would get all his belongings, his properties, and cash worth a combined value of €1 million.
Pasquale didn’t have children and following his death, everything has now gone to the dog.
The animal lover was 83 when he found Tor near his home, on the outskirts of Milan. Tor quickly became his best friend and in 2014 he alerted Pasquale’s neighbours, who called an ambulance, after he suffered a heart attack.
After he’d recovered Pasquale told his lawyer he wanted to guarantee a good future for the dog.
Italian law doesn’t allow for animals to inherit but Pasquale was able to instruct a legal executor to carry out his wishes when he was gone.
Pasquale died at the end of April and Tor is now living in a special facility where he receives all the care he needs.
But the executor believes it would be better to find a new family for Tor and is now searching for the right owners.
He contacted local media in order to try and find a new home for the incredibly wealthy pooch.
It’s unclear what will happen to Tor’s fortune when he gets a new home and where the money will go when he eventually dies.

Sponsor-A-Vaccination
This initiative was started due to the recent outbreak of distemper, seeing how many animals were not vaccinated, we needed to start a new fundraising campaign to assist those who cannot afford to get their animals vaccinated. For an amount of R120 we will gladly vaccinate and de-worm an animal from a less fortunate area in your name.

Like most of the community of Knysna commemorated the 7th of June, one year after the devastating fires ripped through our beautiful town, our team had a hard time dealing with all the emotions that went hand in hand with the weeks that followed after that awe-full day.
We remembered the lost but never forgotten,
We celebrated happy reunions and
We rejoiced the re-homed.

We were stretched to breaking point during the devastating fires last year, and never faltered once in our task to help as many as possible within our locality, and from neighbouring areas such as Plettenberg Bay.
An open invitation to all registered fire victims were sent out in the first few days after the fires, to offer free medical care, sterilization, food etc. as long as it would be possible.
Approximately 53 families responded to our notice and visited our kennels monthly to collect food, kennels, blankets etc. and whatever else we could assist them with for their beloved animals.
We still offer free medical care to the animals of fire victims.
We also sterilized 25 animals of fire victims free of charge.
We worked tirelessly on Social Media to assist owners with missing pets, and to reunite the stray ones with their owners. We drove for days to burned and abandoned properties to search for missing dogs and cats, putting out food and water while digging through burned houses for any clues or proof of possible living or diseased animals.

During the first 6 months after the fires, we handed out thousands of kilograms of food, treated injured animals for weeks, assisted with animals for safekeeping for many misplaced families who could not take their animals to alternative housing, all free of charge. We also treated and fed not only domestic animals but also farm animals like geese, chickens, cows, horses, pigs, and wildlife that needed assistance.
Our Society and staff went from strength to strength in the last year, and we are very proud of what we, as a team, have achieved to uplift our Society.
MEET MILA AND COOPER
2 DOGGIES AND THEIR OWNER THAT WILL STAY IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER.
7June, one year ago, Tal came to our kennels in a total state looking for his 2 fur kids after they were rescued by Eugene, as Tal and his wife Ilze were stuck in town and could not get to Brenton to fetch their babies. Eugene crossed the lagoon with a boat, saved his family cat,as well as Mila and Cooper and 4 more animals that were surrounded by the fire. Mila and Cooper were brought to our kennels by emergency workers but we did not know how to contact Tal as he did not have a phone. Tal returned later that evening totally distraught, and he was so overwhelmed with joy to find his dogs, it absolutely touched our hearts, but he just wanted to find his wife and reunite the dogs with their mom. We never got his details. So 2 days before the 1 year anniversary of the fires, we bumped into Tal, the man with the little blue car that had us all in tears for weeks, Wow what a moment. We saved donated gifts from last year as we felt we had to give those to 2 special dogs something deserving. So today the family dropped in with their savior. A Huge thank you to Rogz pet supplies for the food and water bowls, the donors of the bedding, blankets, and jerseys, we made a promise to hand out your donations to fire victims. Some a bit later, but we kept our promise. Mila and Cooper thank you for making us smile today
In Loving Memory of Gemma, Fire victim survivor, living her 9 lives to the fullest.
She is hands down one of the bravest kitties we met, surviving after her paws and tail were severely burned during the June fires last year.  Sadly Gemma passed away just a few weeks before her 17th birthday in March this year.
You will be missed by all at KAWS, sweet girl!

It is with great honour that I can share my experience I had with KAWS during what was most probably the most difficult time in Knysna history.

I personally know staff members, Anneline and Retha. When the fires first started, they bravely stayed at KAWS with the animals. I received intermittent messages from them where I was left in tears at the hopelessness and fear for the animals and their own lives that was expressed during that night.

As soon as the roads were opened I went to KAWS to assist with my time. What I saw...made me the most appreciative person alive. I saw staff members working to their absolute limits with no sleep, rest or food...striving to aid everyone with animal related issues.

I saw the staff individually and patiently listening to each and every story of an injured, lost or even a deceased pet with such sympathy, humility and eagerness to help with food, shelter or time to search for pets.

I can truly say that KAWS and their staff truly care and this memory will forever be in my heart.

Kind Regards
Vicki Shelver.

Hi guys

Some feedback on our kitty, adopted July 2017 as Oliver, now called Andries.
Our beautiful boy cat absolutely loves cuddles, is extremely social, purrs with his entire body and is very protective of his dad! He even has his own hashtag, #andriesthecat! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to have this little fluff bundle in our lives. We adopted him after we lost our home in the fires, and he reminds us everyday what's important : love, cuddles and each other.
Thank you KAWS for all the hard work you do!

Kind regards
The Straeulis - Frances, Chris & Andriesthecat

We would like to update our volunteer database, please contact Geraldine Diedloff via email at g.diedloff@gmail.com to make sure we have all your contact details should you wish to be contacted to assist with events.
STREET COLLECTION VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR  SATURDAY THE 7TH OF JULY.

ALL WE ASK IS AN HOUR OR TWO OF YOUR TIME, PLEASE EMAIL YOUR DETAILS TO kawssocial@gmail.com IF YOU ARE WILLING TO ASSIST.
BRING OUT YOUR GOODIES!

We’re now halfway through the year and our fundraising team are counting the months until the Leisure Isle Festival in November. As always we will have our “gently upcycled” stall there selling pre-loved items which are repackaged and prettified for the public to buy. Our stall is always one of the most popular ones there and people make it their first stop for Christmas gifts - last year we were almost sold out at the end of the first day and made a record amount of money! Some of the items that we use for these gifts are sourced from the KAWS charity shop in Market Street, kindly provided by Mikey and her team, and the rest are direct donations from our supporters.  We can use anything that you no longer need – as long as it’s unused and in good condition of course! Toiletries, jewellery, bags, toys, books, ornaments, fine china, collectables – and of course any unwanted gifts that you might have stashed away as well! We will also have our “Curiosities and Collectables” section as well this year for those special and treasured items that you might like to donate. So please have a look through your cupboards and do a de-clutter – and let us re-use what you no longer need. Any items specifically for the KAWS Christmas Table can be dropped off at Trellidor on the Main Road in Knysna or you can contact Elaine on 082 360 4580 or Cathie on 083 291 7967 to arrange collection.

Please add a bag of food to your shopping cart

Next time you make a turn at your local supermarket, please consider buying a bag of dry dog or cat food for our Society.  Sadly a batch of donated food that was infected spoiled most of our stock and we had to get rid of the spoiled food. Due to this unforeseen circumstance our food supplies are very low, and we would appreciate any food donation.
