Author Talk: James Carroll
Tuesday, July 10, 6:30 p.m.

The Truro Public Library is honored to present author James Carroll to read from and sign his recent novel, The Cloister.  The National Book Award-winning writer has composed a novel about the timeless love story of Peter Abelard and Héloïse, and its impact on a modern priest and a Holocaust survivor seeking sanctuary in Manhattan.  Spanning centuries and continents, The Cloister is the compelling story of four characters ahead of their time, questioning faith, identity, and love against a backdrop of historical upheaval.  It is also James Carroll at his best, deftly taking us to and from different time periods and personal perspectives, and challenging us to consider and reconsider our own long-held beliefs, cultural assumptions, and schooling.  Written beautifully, and informed by a breadth of knowledge and understanding most of us don’t possess, it is an indispensable gift, unflinching and engaging, with humanism at its base and its eye on the present and future.  James Carroll is the author of twelve novels, most recently The Cloister, and eight works of non-fiction, most recently Christ Actually: The Son of God for the Secular Age. He lectures widely, both in the United States and abroad, and contributes occasional essays to the New Yorker.  Please join us for this special event, which is free and open to the public.

Writer's Symposium with David Levithan and more!
Saturday, July 28, 1:00 p.m.

Calling middle- and high-schoolers, calling adults! Are you a YA or middle years fiction fan? Do you love to write? Join us for a panel discussion with Anica Mrose Rissi (Anna-Banana; Always Forever Maybe); Andrew Harwell (The Spider Ring); Billy Merrell (Vanilla); Zack Loran Clark (The Adventurers Guild); Nick Eliopulos (The Adventurers Guild); and moderator David Levithan (Every Day; Another Day; Two Boys Kissing).

SPECIAL GUEST: Stephen L. Wasby
"Trump and the Law:
A Conversation with Steve Wasby"
Tuesday, July 31, 6:30 p.m.

We are pleased to host a conversation with Steve Wasby on “Trump and the Law.”  Trump is not the only president to have controversial interactions with the law, and there is a difference between politics and law.  Professor Wasby reminds us that it is important to distinguish between policies we might not like, such as rolling back environmental regulations, and actions that are legally questionable or even unconstitutional: they may overlap, but they are not identical. There are many instances of President Trump’s involvement with the law. Stephen L. Wasby, Ph.D., is emeritus professor of political science at the University of Albany-SUNY.  He is the author of several books, including the recently-published Borrowed Judges:  Visitors in the U.S. Courts of Appeals. Please bring questions and join the conversation!
