B3Africa AGM and Uppsala Health Summit

The third B3Africa Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place in Uppsala, Sweden, from 11th to 13th June 2018. During this meeting, hosted by Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU), B3Africa partners reflected on progress and achievements made over the three years of the project and discussed about the sustainability of the eB3Kit.

The AGM was followed by the Uppsala Health Summit (UHS), during which B3Africa partners organized a workshop on "Biobanking for Global Cancer Care". The UHS was also a great opportunities for partners to showcased the eB3Kit!

BBMRI-ERIC Webinar: The GDPR and Health Research

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25 May 2018, with direct effect in the EC Member States. In its Article 40, it specifies that the European Commission encourages “the drawing up of codes of conduct intended to contribute to the proper application of this Regulation, taking account of the specific features of the various processing sectors and the specific needs of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.” The BBMRI-ERIC led Code of Conduct for Health Research initiative is committed to such a code, aiming at (a) contributing to the proper application of the regulation, (b) taking into account the specific features of processing personal data in the area of health, (c) clarifying and specifying certain rules of the GDPR for controllers who process personal data for purposes of scientific research in the area of health, (d) helping to demonstrate compliance by controllers and processors with the regulation, and (e) helping to foster transparency and trust in the use of personal data in the area of health research. Currently, the code focuses on Europe but in the next phase it has to take so-called Third Countries (non-European countries to which data is processed) into account: to find legally sound and equally practical solutions will be crucial.

On 5 June 2018, a webinar took place to present the initiative and give an update on current achievements. A first section of the code will be released soon for comments, a public consultation of the full code will expectantly start in late 2018. BBMRI-ERIC calls upon B3Africa consortium partners to express their view on the draft text to include their point of view early on.
