The Othello Tunnels

The Othello Tunnels, near Hope, B.C., are a part of the historic Kettle Valley Railway. The Othello Tunnels were originally built in 1914. The railway was decommissioned in 1961 and this particular section became the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park in 1986.

The incredible geology of the canyon and inventive engineering of the tunnels make this a popular place to explore. The Othello Tunnels, 5 in total, are carved through steep canyon walls. Two trestles connecting the tunnels are built over the Coquihalla River, which snakes its way thunderously through the canyon down below.

Closed during the winter months, now is the perfect time to explore the tunnels, and hike along the Hope-Nicola Valley Trail, which has its own historic value.

105 Hikes In and Around Southwestern B.C.

Each month, we're going to feature one new book, relevant to hiking or the outdoors.

To start us off, it makes perfect sense to have a closer look at the newest hiking guide book on the scene: 105 Hikes in Southwest B.C., by Stephen Hui.

105 Hikes is a continuation of the classic 103 Hikes series which has been in publication for nearly 50 years, originally written by Mary and David Macaree.  The 6th Edition of 103 Hikes has been one of my most heavily consulted guidebooks over the last decade, so it's great to see an update to the series.

The book starts off with helpful information on hiking preparedness and ethical hiking, before jumping into the hikes themselves. There's a nice table at the front, containing all 105 hikes and summarizing their difficulty, distance, quality, time, etc - and labels hikes as 'kid-friendly' or 'best to leave for a rainy day'. A very helpful starting point as you try to hone in on your next adventure.

Each guide has a map and beautiful color photo, along with the key stats, including the trailhead coordinates. And while 103 Hikes covered everything from Pemberton to Hope-Manning Park, Hui's 105 Hikes expands geographically to cover hikes as far as Mount Baker and the San Juan Islands.

One other thing I like about the book is that some of the more popular trails are left out (one example is Quarry Rock) to make room for the inclusion of some other great, but lesser-known hikes.

Check out and order 105 Hikes In and Around Southwest B.C. here.

We'll be compiling the books we feature every month in our web-store

Vancouver Trails Mobile App

Some exciting news from our friends over at Vancouver Trails - they've released an iPhone app this week!

The app has all the hiking guides from their site, optimized for your phone. And best of all, you can download maps for offline use ($1.39 ea.). This allows you to see where you are on the map at all times.

They have an Android version already in the works.

Check out their site for more details and make sure you download the app!

'Wander' - Our New Unisex Tank Top

Resfeber (noun, Swedish): “The restless race of the traveler’s heart before the journey begins, when anxiety and anticipation are tangled together”.

You know that feeling when you just learned about the perfect new place to explore? That feeling of packing your gear in anticipation of tomorrow’s early alarm? Driving down new, winding roads while the sun is still rising, worried that you’re actually heading in the right direction? Finally getting there, stepping out of the car into the crisp morning air, and wondering what awaits in the vast wilderness in front of you?

That’s the feeling we get before heading out to explore any new wild place. And that’s that feeling that inspires our friends at Resfeber Lifestyle Clothing (Kelowna, B.C.).

Outdoor Vancouver and Resfeber have partnered to design a new Unisex Tank Top, motivated by our endless desire to wander. This premium-quality tank is made from ultra-soft bamboo jersey.

The tanks will be ready in a few weeks, so we're currently taking pre-orders with a 10% discount!
