Several Counties Receive State Grants to Combat Opioid Crisis
On June 14, 2018, Governor Roy Cooper announced $1.5 million in grant awards to communities to combat the opioid crisis. Twelve community partners, including several counties received funds to implement projects that will advance the goals of the NC Opioid Action Plan. The one-time, state-funded grants of up to $150,000 from the NC Department of Health and Human Services enable partner organizations to support harm reduction, treatment and recovery activities. NCACC’s upcoming Annual Conference will feature a presentation by Sam Quinones, author of Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic. The book tell stories that reveal how unfettered prescriptions of pain medications during the 1990s collided with an influx of black tar heroin, which, when combined with a robust marketing and distribution system, resulted in today’s public opiate crisis.

Mecklenburg County Receives US Communities Purchasing Award
On June 19, 2018, Mecklenburg County received an award from U.S. Communities Purchasing, which is the nation’s largest cooperative purchasing program for local and state government agencies, school districts (K-12), higher education institutions, and nonprofits. The award recognizes Mecklenburg County’s commitment to saving tax payer dollars - over $400,000 each year - by using the program for purchases made by the county.

Three New Housing Recovery Application Centers Open for Hurricane Matthew Victims
People with damaged homes as a result of Hurricane Matthew that live in eligible counties (see list below) may apply for assistance for housing repairs and other housing-related issues through North Carolina’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. Today, Governor Roy Cooper announced the opening of three new ReBuild NC Application Centers to help people apply for financial help to repair or rebuild their homes. New locations include Windsor, Fair Bluff and Kinston, and existing centers are located in Fayetteville, Tarboro, Lumberton and Goldsboro. For more information click here.
The first step in the process is calling 211 to set up an appointment at an application center. At the appointment, housing recovery specialists will guide disaster survivors through completing the full application. State officials recommend that applicants expect to spend two hours completing their application during the appointment.
People who live in any of the 22 counties eligible for CDBG-DR funds may make an appointment to apply at any ReBuild NC Application Center. The following counties are eligible: Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Edgecombe, Greene, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt, Robeson, Tyrell, Wayne and Wilson.

Registration Open for North Carolina Digital Government Summit 2018
On August 29-30, the Digital Government Summit 2018 will be held in Raleigh. This free event for public sector professionals will discuss the latest challenges and advances in information technology. It also promotes best practices and innovation, and offers networking and partnering opportunities. Agenda topics will include the rise of ransomware, insider threats, artificial intelligence, data sharing and cloud governance, among other things. For more information or to register click here.

White House and Partners Unveil New Ads to Prevent Opioid Misuse by Youth
NCACC participated in a nationwide call hosted by Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to President Trump, Lisa Sherman, President/CEO of the Ad Council, Robin Koval, President/CEO of the Truth Initiative and Jim Carroll, Deputy Director (and nominee for Director) of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The call discussed joint efforts on a new ad campaign to dissuade youth from misusing opioids. The ads, which feature real, impactful stories about young people who became addicted, seek to prevent youth from experimenting with opioids. The ads show the addictive power of these drugs and how they can lead people to resort to extreme measures to feed their addiction.
