LAST MEETING

The June 10, 2018 meeting of the Ancient Coin Club of Los Angeles (ACCLA) was brought to order by President Kenneth Friedman at 1:38 PM. President Friedman welcomed everyone - including new visitor Terry Dadd - and called for brief reports. Barry Rightman gave the Treasurer's report. Secretary Michael Connor reported that the Club website had received over 300 visitors per day for the year to date. He reminded folks to use the special links on the webpage when buying on Amazon so that ACCLA benefits from referral fees. Visitors can also benefit ACCLA using Amazon Smile. The Club facebook page now has 1,442 followers. Vice-President Roger Burry reviewed upcoming meeting programs. In July, Randy Butler will present Murder in 336 BCE (i.e. the assassination of Philip II). In August, there will be a field trip to the Getty Villa.

President Friedman presented certificates of appreciation to Roger Burry and Bob Effler for their presentation Ten Mothers on Coins from Ancient Times given at the May meeting. Roy Iwama volunteered to man the ACCLA table at the Long Beach Expo, June 14-16. Ken Friedman recommended a new book The Early Coins of Athens by Jasper Burns.

The President then turned the meeting over to the Club’s auctioneer, Joe Tooma for the mid-year auction. The auction featured 21 lots including 4 book lots and 17 coin lots. Eleven of the 21 lots (52%) sold. Special thanks to Joe Tooma for organizing the auction and for his exceptional performance as auctioneer.

The June presentation Ancient Palmyra, Oasis in the Syrian Desert was given by Bob Effler and Roger Burry. Bob reviewed Aurelian's reform of the coinage that was precipitated by the economic crises that ensued when Shapur I captured Emperor Valerian and Aurelian's role in containing Zenobia’s breakaway Palmyran Empire. Roger Burry outlined the geography and history of Palmyra, and concluded with a brief review of the recent vandalism of the Palmyra ruins by the Daeish. As always, Roger and Bob’s talk engendered lots of comment and discussion, and was much appreciated by the audience.

RECENT ACQUISITIONS

Hieronymus 10 Litrai

Mike Cozzolino recently acquired this magnificent portrait coin of the Syracusan tyrant Hieronymos (lived 231-214 BCE; ruled 215-214 BCE). The silver 10 litrai piece (22 mm, 8.51 g, 7h), was minted in Syracuse, Sicily, 215-214 BCE. The obverse shows the diademed head of Hieronymos wearing sideburns, with a thunderbolt in the field behind. The sideburns are absent from his first portrait and may acknowledge his alliance with Hannibal. The reverse shows a winged thunderbolt with ΔΑ above within the two lined legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΟΣ / ΙΕΡΩΝΥΜΟY. Holloway 61 (rev. die); SNG ANS 1028. Ex Philip T. Ashton collection.
