2011 CCC Iron Mike - Sat 6th August - 1pm

The scheduled Iron Mike race this weekend is still short four marshals. If we do not have marshals for this race secured by Thursday we will have to cancel the race. All members of CCC are required to fill a marshal duty at some stage during the race year. Without marshals we cannot legally run races.

If you have a marshal duty scheduled at a later date in the year and wish to swap it for this weekend can you please let me know. Anyone else who knows they have been left off the list or are able to help could you please contact me (nathanspillane@me.com). The race details are below.

Have your name etched alongside Cadel Evans as a winner of the prestigious CCC Iron Mike, one of the toughest local road races of the season.

The premier road cycling event on the winter race calendar in Canberra, the Iron Mike offers a challenge for all grades and abilities. The Iron Mike Course follows Uriarra Road from near the entrance to the Stromlo crit circuit through Uriarra Crossing along the scenic straight up past the homestead, into the lower Brindabella hills to the end of the tar before returning to the Stromlo Forest Park entry.

Getting Started in Cycling Program

Intake 1: Sept to Oct (8 weeks) and Intake 2: Feb to Mar (8 weeks)

This is an eight-week training program aimed at preparing novices for the Criterium season (Intake One) and Winter Road Racing (Intake Two). These intakes potentially prepare the novices to move into the Road Cycling Development Program. The bunch rides and skill sessions will be delivered by a NCAS Level 1/2 cycle coach. An introduction into the Wednesday morning bunch ride will also be conducted from Week 5 onward. This will ensure novices are provided with the ongoing support in training post program through this introduction. This program is targeting cyclists who are new to the sport, recreational cyclists who like to explore their potential, and cyclists from other sports such as mountain bikers and triathletes.

Other support for novices

  • Bike maintenance session
  • Intro to wed bunch ride

Cost
Canberra Cycling Club would like to offer participants a competitive pricing structure for the Getting Started in Cycling Program. Unfortunately due to next year cycling membership cost not confirmed by Cycling Australia, we are unable to provide interested participants the joining cost at this time.

Strong showing by Team Suzuki at Tour of Reunion Island

Canberra based Team Suzuki cyclists, Ben Hill, William Lind, Brendan Johnston and Ivan Michelin-Beard, have returned from a successful trip to Reunion Island. The five day, six stage race was held from 13 to 17 July and featured both an individual and team time trial, criterium and three road stages on tough, hilly circuits.

Reunion Island is a French Territory in the Indian Ocean located just east of Madagascar with a population of around 800,000. The island is 63 km long and 45 km wide and features a volcano 3,070 m above sea level! Team Suzuki riders enjoyed the favourable Reunion climate – the average temperature on the coast is 22°C during winter and 27°C in summer. In the mountains, the average temperature drops to 11°C during winter and 18°C during winter. The climate, stunning scenery and tranquil environment make Reunion Island an attractive holiday destination and an alternative gateway or stopover for those travelling from Australia to Europe.

CCC Tour de France Tipping Results

The 2011 Tour de France has been run and won, and more importantly the CCC Tour Tipping Comp results are in. The tipping was fiercely competitive, as teams fought to get in front and then hold their position through a full three weeks of racing. Over 50 teams took part in the competition this year and in the end Allan's team Faema was able to take out first place, which is his first win after many long years of tipping anonymity. Thanks to all those who took part and thanks to the CCC for providing the prizes.

  3. Paul Smith (CCC T-Shirt)
