 Butterfly BusBuButterfly Bush

Sadly, my Dad passed away recently but the wonderful students in my Tuesday morning class gave me a gift certificate from a nursery to buy something to plant in memory of him. Since he loved to fly - pilot in the Air Force, professor of Aerospace Engineering and owner of his own airplane - a Butterfly Bush seemed appropriate.

Save a Painting with Doilies

A fun and creative way to save a painting that you are not happy with is to use doilies as stencils. Place them on the paper and then use watercolor to paint thru the holes and around the lacy edges. You can use different sizes and shapes and place them throughout the composition to help unify and add interest. These are a couple of my students' paintings - click here to see one of my paintings where I used doilies and some stamps to enhance the floral composition.paiotning

Ask About Art
I consider myself a Value Painter. I am more concerned with the lights and darks of a painting than anything else. Most value scales have ten levels from white thru the greys to black. Every painting should have at least three values - light, mid and dark. You can utilize the whole scale from white to black or focus on the lighter end or the darker end. If you look at the painting above in black and white it is easier to see the values and how the darks create movement throughout the painting. We often focus more on color and forget value -  "Value does the work but color gets all the credit". Click here to see this painting in color.

Creative Journey - First Oil Painting

Years ago I did Decorative Painting with oils but after I discovered watercolor I never went back. Lately, I have had the urge to try them again but in a larger, bolder style with lots of brushwork. I began an oil class a month ago and after much struggle - accidentally mixing in acrylic with the oils on my palette, learning to handle thick paint and adjusting to not being the teacher but having someone else correct me and tell me what to do -  this is my first finished oil painting. I still love the free flowing feeling of watercolor but I also enjoyed being able to layer light upon dark with the oils and using different brush strokes for different effects. In my own Creative Journey it  has  been good to stretch myself artistically with something new and to be reminded of certain painting fundamentals. What is your next creative challenge?
