The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) hosted the inaugural Walter Lippmann Memorial Lecture recently, delivered by World Vision CEO Tim Costello to a packed Wheeler Centre crowd.
Mr Costello’s speech, Piecing Australia together: The paradox of cultural diversity in an evolving nation, covered many contemporary aspects of multicultural debate including population growth, refugees and diversity. MORE

Aged Care News
The Commonwealth Department of Health has allocated $2.2 million to translation and interpreting services for CALD Australians in aged care facilities. At present, CALD seniors are 16 per cent of aged care residents but that's expected to rise to 25 per cent by 2026. Interpreting services are essential if aged care services can meet the communication needs of their residents in the future. MORE

Action on Youth Engagement in Sport
ECCV released its most recent policy paper, Multicultural Youth Engagement in Sport last week and called for local councils to boost expenditure on public facilities that boost CALD youth engagement in sport. MORE

Police Act on Race-based Crime
Victoria Police is commended on the release of their long awaited Prejudice Motivated Crime strategy. Under this strategy the police will now be properly equipped to act when a crime that is racially motivated is commited.
ECCV has worked closely with Police Victoria on improving the relationship between the police and CALD communities and welcomes this announcement. MORE

Partner News - AFL International Cup
The AFL seeks ten multicultural and/or indigenous women (aged 18+) to play in next month’s International Cup.
They need to be available to play in Sydney and in Melbourne from August 15-26.
The players need to have an interest in playing sport, have general fitness and want to have a go at playing Australian football. They will have the opportunity to play against women from all over the world.

News from the Director's Desk
ECCV works continuously to monitor and promote multicultural messages in the media. The top four issues in the past two weeks were:
1. Last week ECCV commented on Channel Nine News in response to the conviction of a 31-year-old man for child abuse. ECCV does not believe 'culture' is an appropriate defense for acts committed against Australian law. MORE
2. ECCV condemned the 'Ban the Burqa Day' Facebook group as an example of religious intolerance disguised as security concern. MORE
3. AFL has formalised its multicultural round with Tom Liberatore, Harry O'Brien, Drew Petrie and Majak Daw promoting the round at North Melbourne Football Club. MORE
4. Monash University released a study suggesting that even if net overseas migration numbers were halved, Australia could still sustain its mining boom. MORE

Australian Drug Foundation Translated Resources
The Victorian Department of Health has just released Cheers? Alcohol and your family, a collection of translated resources about alcohol and the family.
The pamphlets are available in Arabic, English, Polish, Spanish, Sudanese and Vietnamese.
The posters are designed to raise awareness of alcohol consumption problems and related harms.
