Based on its own videos, the Arizona-based maker of recycled-denim Ultratouch insulation still doesn't get it when it comes to installation quality.

What do you do when a green product doesn't live up to expectations? Here at BuildingGreen, we really want to see green building products succeed in the marketplace, and make it easy for professionals to find the best of the best in our GreenSpec guide.

But when we see something substandard, we feel it's important to point it out. To win the mainstream over to sustainability, we have to deliver on promises of reduced environmental burdens along with superior performance.

A little while back, I took Bonded Logic to task for flaws its Ultratouch cotton batt design and installation process.

Specifying Carpets Gets a Whole Lot Easier

The Pharos carpet library includes a wide variety of components that you can evaluate both individually and within a complete assembly.  These include commonly specified polyurethane, polyolefin, EVA, PVC, and bitumen backings, and fibers that include a range of recycled content.

Pharos also evaluates treatments, in particular anti-microbials and stain resistance systems. To evaluate entire carpet assemblies, first select a manufacturer, then a style sold by the manufacturer. Next, select the face fiber and backing options for each style.  Based upon your selections, Pharos generates a product profile which evaluates the product as a whole. It also displays the components—fibers, backings, and treatments—from which the evaluation is created.

Clicking on the individual components within the product profile yields much more information. You can also evaluate the components separately from assemblies to achieve even greater detail on their characteristics.

Our 5 ½ minute video shows how to quickly narrow carpet choices according to your specific criteria.

Saving water and energy with low-flow showerheads

Showers use up a lot of water, accounting for about 17% of all indoor residential water use, and old, inefficient showerheads not only waste water, they also waste the energy needed to heat that water. Early adopters of first-generation low-flow showerheads found that some fixtures worked so poorly that they had to spend more time in the shower rinsing off, offsetting any water savings. Fortunately, low-flow showerheads have evolved, and current WaterSense-labeled showerheads have to comply with performance standards for spray force and coverage. GreenSpec lists WaterSense showerheads that have a flow rate of 1.75 gallons per minute (gpm) or less, well below the federal standard of 2.5 gpm.
