Welcome New Board Members and Executive
PHA Canada held its Annual General Meeting held in Toronto on September 18th and four new Board Members were elected to the PHA Canada Board of Directors. We would like to welcome new Board Members: Dr. Ian Adatia from Edmonton, Darwin Hanofski from Saskatchewan, Lynn-Marie Cox from Edmonton and Rita Hebert from Montreal. Several previously serving Board members decided not to run for re-election and stepped down from the Board. We would like to extend a big thank you to outgoing Board Members: Sharon Proudfoot, Dr. Kim Boutet and Carol Storseth for your years of service on our Board.
Following the AGM, the newly elected Board of Directors met for their first meeting and elected the 2011-2012 Executive as follows:
  • Frank Poon, President,
  • Maureen Tymkow, Treasurer and
  • Sandy Metcalfe, Secretary.

During the 2011 Conference a special plaque of recognition was presented to outgoing President, Darren Bell, recognizing him for his years of dedication and service to PHA Canada. A special thank you to Darren for all of his hard work over the past three years as President as well as his years of service leading up to that point.

Conference 2011: Uniting the Community from Coast to Coast
Our second biennial National PH conference was held in Toronto on September 16th to 18th this year. The theme for this year's conference was “Uniting the Community from Coast to Coast” and this was truly achieved as this year’s attendance totalled close to 250 attendees with participants attending from all over Canada from as far away as British Columbia to the West and Prince Edward Island to the East.

The weekend consisted of many opportunities to network and socialize as well as a full schedule of educational presentations and support group meetings. Special presentations were given by keynote speaker Mark Black, a heart and double-lung transplant recipient turned 4 time marathon runner, best-selling author, life coach and motivational speaker and guest speaker Carl Hicks, Immediate Past Chair of Pulmonary Hypertension Association of the USA. Networking opportunities included a special Friday night “Meet & Greet” hosted by the Toronto Chapter of PHA Canada as well as a “PHenomenal Young Adults After Hours Meet & Greet” in Monarchs Lounge which gave young PHers a chance to meet in a casual setting and share their experiences.

Conference attendees had the opportunity to leave their messages of hope on our “Wall of Hope”, which was displayed throughout the weekend. Quotes from the Wall will be used for our upcoming awareness month activities. Read about the weekend in more detail in the upcoming issue of Connections due to hit your mailbox in late October.

A big thank you to all of our amazing volunteers - we couldn't have done it without you

Awareness Month 2011: "Lend a Hand for PH" Campaign
With November fast approaching, we are busy gearing up for our national awareness month campaign.  This year’s “Lend a Hand for PH” campaign will see groups across Canada working to collect as many blue handprints as they can in order to raise awareness of PH with the use of our “BLUES” slogan which stands for:
Bluish hands, feet & lips,
Lightheadedness,
Unable to Breathe,
Edema (swelling of feet, ankles)
Syncope (fainting) -- all symptoms of PH.
The campaign will kick off with launches in four major cities across Canada: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver and will wrap up with a major event on Parliament Hill at the end of the month where the total number of handprints collected will be revealed. We are looking for your help to make this campaign a success! Contact our office at lendahand@phacanada.ca to pre-order your Awareness Month Kit, which will include all the materials you need to “lend a hand for PH” in your community!
