September 2011 Newsletter
The big news this month is the launch of the new Survive and Save national lifesaving awards programme. The new programme (which will gradually replace the existing senior awards, including Bronze Medallion) is split into 3 levels: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Each level includes core skills and the opportunity to specialise in Beach, Stillwater or Sport - so there's something for everyone. You can read all about the Survive and Save programme on the brand new RLSS website: www.rlssonline.com

The RLSS has brought out a new Lifesaving Instructors qualification to accompany the new award. Only qualified Lifesaving Instructors can teach and assess the Survive and Save awards, so read on if you'd like to find out how to get qualified...

Finally, please remember that the branch is here to help YOU! We can provide advice, training, advertising and even financial assistance. If there's anything that we can do to support you, please get in touch at avon@rlsswest.org.uk - we'd love to hear from you!

Become A Lifesaving Instructor
Only qualified Lifesaving Instructors are allowed to teach and assess the Survive and Save awards. Existing Trainer Assessors (TAs) can purchase the Lifesaving Manual for Instructors from the Lifesavers Direct Website then complete the online update at www.surviveandsave.co.uk.

If you are not a TA and you would like to become a lifesaving instructor, there are two courses running in the Avon & North Wiltshire area. The first is on 24th/25th Sept in Keynsham, and the second is on 1st/2nd Oct in Frome. The courses have been subsidised by the branch so they'll cost you just £40. Please see www.rlsswest.org.uk for more information or to book your place.

International Lifesaving Youth Work
Would you like to get involved in international lifesaving youth work? On Sun 11 Sept, the RLSS is hosting a discussion about future opportunities for European youth exchanges at River House in Broom. There'll be a short presentation from the team who attended the Volunteer Together  seminar in Iceland, and the leader of the recent RLSS Youth Exchange to Germany will be telling us about their trip. The rest of the afternoon will be spent discussing how we can help more lifesaving groups to form international links, and talking about the youth exchange projects which are planned for next year. Please contact David "Blondie" Fielding (david@rlsswest.org.uk) for more information or to reserve your place.
