  1. Premier and Minister for the Arts Ted Baillieu has announced grants of up to $12,000 are available for individual projects that preserve and provide access to Victorian local history as part of the Government's Local History Grants Program. $350,000 in funding is available in 20111-12.

“Each year the Local History Grants Program funds a diverse range of projects that help communities connect with their history in innovative and engaging ways. Projects like the writing of histories, preservation of precious collections and the sharing of stories through exhibitions and multimedia help us as Victorians to understand our past and each other,” Mr Baillieu said.
The program is open to not-for-profit community groups across the state and is run by Public Record Office Victoria.

Mr Baillieu said the program celebrates the history of local communities and supports them in preserving and sharing their stories with the public. “We have a rich and diverse history in Victoria, with many unique and important stories to tell. These grants support the networks of volunteers and community organisations that are custodian’s of our State’s heritage, ensuring that it is available to future generations and shared with the public," Ms Baillieu said.

Previously funded local history projects include:

• Newspaper microfilming and digitising
• Multimedia projects and online exhibitions
• Physical exhibitions in community halls and other public facilities
• Historical murals and interpretive signage
• Book publishing
• Digital storytelling
• Cataloguing and indexing projects

Applications close on Friday 11 November 2011.

An information session about the grants program and the application process will be held at the Victorian Archives Centre, 99 Shiel St North Melbourne at 10am 14 September 2011.

$39,000 for Victorian Aboriginal groups to preserve their history

wilam naling small grants announced Wednesday 21 September

Map of Victorian Aboriginal language groups.
Public Record Office Victoria and Aboriginal Affairs Victoria have awarded $39,000 in funding to Victorian Aboriginal groups to preserve and share this stories and culture.

Records and cultural collections are a source of pride and history for communities and individuals. These grants enable preservation and access to information about Victorian Aboriginals, and contribute to the ongoing work of reuniting members of the Stolen Generations and their descendents with ancestors and family.
Among the nine funded projects is ‘Preservation of photographs of Koori women attending the Sisters Day Out® Well-Being Workshops conducted by Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention & Legal Service Victoria’. The project catalogues images taken since the group’s inception, and provides a record of Victorian Koori women in the 21st century.

Wurega Aboriginal Corporation’s project ‘Our Elders speak of country’ will preserve the oral histories of Wotjobaluk elders, who have direct connections to the Wimmera/Mallee region of Victoria. This project makes possible the ongoing transmission of creation stories, knowledge of cultural connections to the flora and fauna of the Wimmera, and insights into the impacts of colonisation.

A presentation of certificates to recipients will be held at the Victorian Archives Centre in North Melbourne on Wednesday 21 September 2011. Executive Director of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria Ian Hamm, and distinguished Aboriginal elder Jim Berg will be present at the awards.

It's by no means Google Earth, but the aerial photos of rivers are a spectacular and unique insight into our ever changing landscape.
