Military Science unveils new facility

The Military Science Department at UWSP celebrated its new space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the Health Enhancement Center on Thursday, Sept. 1. The new facility includes offices, a 32-seat classroom, 10-seat tactical laboratory, a student computer lab and storage areas. Previously the department was housed in the Student Services Center, with half of the department on the second floor and the other on the mezzanine level at the other end of the building. Faculty and staff help students settle in

Thousands of students returned to campus September 3-4 and we were there to help, including School of Education Assistant Professor Kym Buchanan and his daughter who help students move in every year! Members of the UWSP athletic teams, Dean Marty Loy and Chancellor Bernie Patterson were also among those who braved the weather and lent a hand. Watch Video | View Photos

Jasia Steinmentz publishes food and nutrition book

School of Health Promotion & Human Development Professor Jasia Steinmetz, Ph.D., RD, CD, recently published Eat Local: Simple Steps to Enjoy Real, Healthy & Affordable Food. The book explains how inexpensive food and the global food system are major contributors to many of the problems facing our country and planet today: obesity and other health problems, environmental pollution, climate change, and loss of local jobs. Consumers have heard about local foods, but most don't know how to go about changing their food choices. Eat Local is a simple, step-by-step, roadmap for consumers interested in improving their diets with local, sustainable food choices.

Pointers raise money for cancer during Pink Game

The UWSP football team raised $28,000 during second annual UWSP Pink Game for Cancer, sponsored by Eastbay & Team Schierl, on Saturday, September 10. The funds will be shared between the Susan G. Komen foundation of Central Wisconsin fighting breast cancer and Bill Schroeder's Circle of Friends foundation, which provides opportunities to kids with cancer. Donations were made through sales of T-shirts, game-worn jerseys and a silent auction.

Spud Bowl scholarships winners were also honored at the game. Winners included two of our own CPS School of Education students: Kendra Daniel, an elementary education major from Marshfield, and Rebecca Wagner, an early childhood education major from Stevens Point. Congratulations!

ComD graduate students enjoy welcome picnic

Over 50 School of Communicative Disorders graduate students, faculty/staff, administrators, and guests gathered at Iverson Park on Thursday, September 8 for the annual Communicative Disorders graduate student picnic to celebrate the start of a new school year. Thanks to all who attended!

CPS Building updates

A variety of daily newspapers are now available to read in the CPS Faculty/Staff lounge (room 109), including Stevens Point Journal, Wisconsin State Journal, NY Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal.

A new program on campus called the New Faculty and Academic Staff Seminar Series begins Monday, September 19. These sessions are designed to introduce new and/or newer staff to various student services as well as professional development resources on campus. The first session will be Freshman Profile 2011: Understanding our New UWSP Students, led by Shari Summers. All meetings held in CPS 209.

The College of Professional Studies is excited to display a Steelcase LearnLab test drive unit in the area outside the CPS Café September 14-28, with demonstrations on Wednesday, September 21. The LearnLab will be open for students, faculty and staff to use for collaboration and communication as well as transfer of information between individuals and groups during this trial period. During this experimental opportunity, the CPS Faculty/Staff Lounge (room 109) will be open for CPS Café overflow.
