Lunch with Leaders

Kate Brown
Oregon’s Secretary of State

October 7, 2011@ Noon -
Willamette Heritage Center, at the Mill

As part of Salem City Club’s “Lunch with Leaders” program series, Oregon’s Secretary of State Kate Brown will address members of SCC for the first time on October 7, speaking about the challenges that come with being an elected leader in these tough economic times.

Since taking office in 2008, Secretary of State Brown has focused on ensuring integrity and fairness in Oregon’s elections, providing excellent customer service and cutting red tape and costs for Oregon business.

"In these tough economic times providing the best services to Oregonians has become more challenging than ever before,” Brown explained. That, according to Brown, is why she supports the implementation of efficient technologies that better serve the businesses and agencies in Oregon.

For example, Brown oversaw the development and implementation of an online voter registration system in 2010. The online system makes registering to vote in Oregon quick and easy for those eligible to mail in a ballot. For the state it means saving money. A recent Pew study says Oregon spent $8 million to register voters in 2008 that’s about $4 dollars per voter. According to Brown with the online system, Oregon is spending less than $1 per registered voter with a savings of six million.

Currently, Brown is leading the effort to develop Oregon’s Central Business registry which provides an online one-stop-shop for those looking to do business in our great state. This online system will enable entrepreneurs to create a business and comply with all state and federal regulations. Brown is hopeful that the online registry will save time, money and create jobs in Oregon.

Brown was born in Spain and spent most of her childhood in Minnesota. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Conservation with a certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder; and a law degree and Certificate in Environmental Law from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in Portland.
Brown has taught at Portland State University, and practiced family and juvenile law.  She was appointed to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1991.  In 1996, after winning election to two more House terms, she won election to the Oregon Senate.  Two years later, she was elected Senate Democratic Leader and, in 2004, senators made her the first woman to serve as Oregon’s Senate Majority Leader.  In 2008, she was elected Oregon’s 24th Secretary of State and subsequently was appointed by Governor Ted Kulongoski to chair the Oregon Sustainability Board.

In her legislative career, Brown led successful efforts to make Oregon’s state government open and accessible by taking legislative committee meetings to communities around the state.  She also ensured funding for a comprehensive review of Oregon’s ethics laws, spearheaded legislation creating a searchable online database of campaign contributions and expenditures, and reformed Oregon’s initiative process to reduce fraud and protect the citizen’s right to petition their government.

Secretary Brown lives in Portland with her husband, Dan.

Please join us October 7, 23, 2011 for our Lunch with Leaders as we hear from Oregon’s Secretary of State, Kate Brown.  Lunch and program will be hosted in the Dye House at Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill.  For those not on our “continuous attendee” list, you may e-mail lunch reservations to: rsvp@salemcityclub.com or call 503-370-2808 by Wednesday noon, October 5, 2011. SCC members lunch cost is $12, all others $15.   Doors open at 11:30 AM.  The community is welcomed and encouraged to join us!   There is a $5 charge for visitors who would like coffee and a cookie.  For more information on upcoming programs, and directions to this event please go to www.salemcityclub.com.
