September  2011 — Studio News

With the end of summer and the start of fall comes a change in our decor: pumpkins, gourds, black cats and all things scary. I love getting out fall goodies and displaying throughout the house. I am excited to show some examples of how I have decorated with my artwork in this newsletter and upcoming newsletters. I am a visual person, and it always helps me to see how something will look in my home. I hope this newsletter might spark some ideas for your home.

This summer was a lot of fun in the studio. I was blessed to be able to participate in the "Art Effects" art show in Columbia, Tennessee. I met so many nice people and made lots of new artist friends. A lot of you receiving this email stopped by and expressed an interest in my paintings or became a collector — it was so nice to meet each of you! Thank you!! Over $20,000 was raised by local artists for the Maury Regional Foundation, that money will go to help those who can not afford health screening. (What a blessing!)

With the weather getting cooler I think of the changing seasons and all the beautiful colors on God's palette that are just around the corner. I recently joined the Chestnut Group, which is a local group of artists dedicated to the conservation & preservation of vanishing landscapes in Middle Tennessee. I look forward to getting outside more and joining in their plein air excursions. (http://mydigimag.rrd.com/publication/?i=80421) Go here to read a recent article about the group.

This is my first newsletter to many of you (exciting), I look forward to keeping in touch and adding more information about what is happening in my studio each month. If you are receiving this you are a collector of my artwork, close friend or you signed up for my mailing list. If you would not like to receive my newsletters you can unsubscribe at the bottom of this newsletter. I promise no hurt feelings! :)

What is Coco up to? Find out below. :)

Spice it Up!

What I love about these little paintings is that they can be displayed on little easels anywhere in your home. They are so easy to work in and add a splash of color to any nook of a room.
•  Wall decorations are often overlooked when people change their decor, but they play a major role in the overall atmosphere of a room.

Change your Scenery — it can change your mood!

When I change my surroundings to freshen things up it lifts my mood. :)
Think creatively about display areas. There are many places you may choose to share freestanding art, including pedestals, tabletops, shelves, fireplace mantels, the floor, display boxes, easels and cabinets.

A Forever Memory

I am very sentimental, my closets are a testiment to that- (borderline hoarding). I painted this figurine my great uncle gave me, and then thought about this shelf my dad made for me. The shelf made a perfect platform for the figurine with the painting and is a constant reminder of wonderful memories of my great uncle. Do you have a treasure you would like worked into a painting?

Strike a Pose!

Does your dog love to chew on a favorite toy, play in the creek or even chase his/her tail? What shows your pet's personality? Let me capture your pet in a forever memory. Coco, my puppy has been eying all her furry facebook friends  and has come up with a fun way to share all of her friends.  Grab your camera, and have your pet strike a pose. Coco wants to see me paint more of the furry friends she sees on facebook, so I am offering a furry facebook friend special — 6x6 inch commissioned painting $65 and 6x8 inch is $75. This offer will be good through the holiday season. If you are not happy with the painting you do not have to purchase! You just need to go to my facebook fan page and click like and say in the comments your pet wants to be Coco's furry facebook friend.

A good quality photograph will enable me to achieve the best results.
  • If possible, photograph your pet outside in natural lighting and will show their colors and markings most accurately. However, avoid strong sunlight as this may make areas of the photo too bright or cast dark shadows. A bright but overcast day is ideal.
  • If you're unable to photograph outside, try to photograph in an area that is well lit with natural light, such as near a window. Avoid using the flash or having indoor lights on.
  • Ideally to take the best photograph be on eye level with your pet.
  • So I can see the detail of your pet's features, it is important to have a clear, high resolution photograph. If you have a zoom lens, all the better! If not, just try to get at a close distance while staying in focus. A nice shot of the head and shoulders would be ideal.
  • If you would like more than one animal in the painting, it is better to photograph them separately to get the best shot of each one. If possible, I would also need a photo showing the animals next to each other, purely so I can see the differences in size/height

"Happy Girl"- this painting is available at Laurel Leaf Gallery, in historic Leiper's Fork. :)

Beach Beauty

My favorite place to vacation is the beach. What's yours?? Love watching the pelicans fly over when at the beach, still look a little prehistoric to me.
Vacation photos and paintings bring back great memories for me. How about working some into your fall decor?

This month outside my studio. Bambi?

Taking care of our bluebirds
The fact that these birds are cavity nesters makes them ideal candidates for a bird house. In fact, if there was ever a bird in need of our help in providing nest boxes, it is the Eastern Bluebird.
If you plan on putting up a nesting box, place it on a pole within 4-5 feet of the ground. This height will help discourage house sparrows and make it easier for you to monitor.  (http://www.wild-bird-watching.com/Blue_Birds.html)
