Carol DeMumbrum's Painting A Day—Studio News: Painting Furry Friends and More!

August  2011 — Studio News

This month has been a hot one and a busy one in my studio. I was blessed to be able to participate in the "Art Effects" art show in Columbia, Tennessee. I met so many nice people and made lots of new artist friends. A lot of you receiving this email stopped by and expressed an interest in my paintings or became a collector — it was so nice to meet each of you! Thank you!! Over $20,000 was raised for the Maury Regional Foundation, that money will go to help those who can not afford health screening. (What a blessing!)

With the month coming to the end, I think of the changing seasons and all the beautiful colors on God's palette that are just around the corner. I recently joined the Chestnut Group, which is a local group of artists dedicated to the conservation & preservation of vanishing landscapes in Middle Tennessee. I look forward to getting outside more and joining in their plein air excursions.

This is my first newsletter for my studio (exciting), I look forward to keeping in touch and adding more information about what is happening in my studio each month.

Who is Outside My Studio?

I am greeted often by critters outside my studio, and I have posted on my blog in the past some of the photos.
This one my son came and got me to show me this little bunny who was chillin under his trampoline. I think he must have been jumping on it while we weren't looking.

Pet Portraits

A lot of you have asked me about painting your pet. I love animals, so they are one of my favorites of God's creation to paint. The holidays will be here before you know it, so now is a great time to commission a portrait of a beloved pet. Photographing your pet is not always so easy, so I am adding a few guidelines to follow for the best possible photo for a painting.

A good quality photograph will enable me to achieve the best results.

  • If possible, photograph your pet outside in natural lighting and will show their colors and markings most accurately. However, avoid strong sunlight as this may make areas of the photo too bright or cast dark shadows. A bright but overcast day is ideal.
  • If you're unable to photograph outside, try to photograph in an area that is well lit with natural light, such as near a window. Avoid using the flash or having indoor lights on.
  • Ideally to take the best photgraph be on eye level with your pet, avoid taking the photo either looking down or up at them, as this may result in an unflattering pose.
  • So I can see the detail of your pet's features, it is important to have a clear, high resolution photograph. If you have a zoom lens, all the better! If not, just try to get at a close distance whilst staying in focus. A nice shot of the head and shoulders would be ideal.
  • If you would like more than one animal in the painting, it is better to photograph them separately to get the best shot of each one. If possible, I would also need a photo showing the animals next to each other, purely so I can see the differences in size/height

"Splish Splash"- this painting sold at the art show and will be a surprise under the Christmas tree. :) ( I love painting!)

Harry

Harry was not only popular at the theaters (Harry Potter), he was also very popular at the "Art Effects" art show. It seems everyone can relate to cows—gotta love their sweet faces.
Harry is available at Laurel Leaf Gallery in historical Leiper's Fork, Tennessee.

Watching the Flock

A little about the "Aussie" breed—
Animated, adaptable and agile, the Australian Shepherd lives for his job, which still involves herding livestock and working as an all-purpose farm and ranch dog. He needs a lot of activity and a sense of purpose to be truly content. Today, due to the breed’s intelligence and versatility, “Aussies” also excel in AKC events such as agility, obedience and herding. Their coats can be black, blue merle, red merle and red with or without white markings.
