President's Letter
Thank you Jane Winston and Diane Lester for chairing the September general meeting and board meeting respectively in my absence. The book sale is four weeks away, and we still have books that need to be priced and sorted. The work doesn't end there. We will also need everyone's help in set-up, working the actual sale, and tear-down. This project is a lot work--as former Book Fair Chair, I speak from experience--and while Margaret and Carrie have done an excellant job, they cannot do it alone. The money we raise from this project is the source of all the good things we do in the community. If you have any ideas for other fundraising opportunities, please let us know.
There will also be a Candidate Forum this month, so please offer your assistance to Public Policy Chair, Wilhemena Jackson-Sibley.
Furthermore, the state AAUW Fall Board Meeting is Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Shorter University, Riverdale Campus. You do not need to be a board member to attend, and if you have never been to one, I highly recommend it. So go and support Laurie Shaw who is state Co-President.
October Program
Dr. Berlithia Pitts, a professor at FVSU, will be leading a discussion of The Help. If you have not had a chance to read this bestseller, there is still time before the meeting. Remember that you are always encouraged to bring a friend along.
September Program Recap
The new meeting location is getting rave reviews from our members (Thank you Lib). Even with some of our regular members unable to attend, we still had a whopping 21 women in attendance.
Important Notes from the September Board Meeting
Book sorting help will be needed for the rest of the month, Thursdays and Saturdays to get all the donations sorted. Bumper stickers will be available at the October meeting for members to put in your back window. A banner had been purchased to be strung across the entrance to Houston Mall.
The Board adopted a proposal to the change our Newsletter to service to MailChimp and to change our website service to the AAUW Platform. What does this mean? We will still maintain control of the content, but will be not be responsible for updating and maintaing the software for the site.
The Bylaw Committee heading by Eveyln Merk is working on revising the Branch Policies.
AAUW is encouraging branches to have Cocktails and Convos this year to celebrate the 130th anniversary of AAUW. Our branch will plan one in February of 2012.
Reading is Fundamental
We will be at Lindsay Elementary October 20, 2011, January 19, 2012, and March 15, 2011. This is the second year of our three year committment at Lindsay Elementary. As of now, dates have not been selected for Cherished Children.
