Kia Ora Koutou,
I hope you all managed some downtime over the holiday break.
It has been wonderful to hear the positive chatter and social interactions amongst the children out in the playground during the week.
The teachers have all enjoyed getting back to work with their classes and we have lots of things to look forward to for the remainder of the year.
As you will be aware, we are holding a community consultation on August 7th here at school. We will provide some childcare for the children during this time. There will not be room for children to attend the consultation. The information will be shared with the children the following week.
We hope to see many of you there and hope you will attend our school community hangi at the conclusion of the consultation. This is a wonderful opportunity for us all to come together and take part in an traditional cultural experience. The children will all take part in the process leading up to the hangi.
My thanks to Caroline & Steve Cummings for making this event possible. Thank you also to those of you who have already offered donations of food and to the PTA for providing the chickens!
We are fortunate to have such a wonderful school community.
Ngā mihi Keri Steele Principal
Community Get-Together & Hangi
We will be holding our Community Get-Together and Hangi on the 7th of August. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a school whānau.
There will be a community presentation at 5:30pm to let you know where we are at with the rebuilding of the school. This will be presented by Justin McCartney from PXA (architect) and Tim Scott from KamoMarsh (landscape architect). We are also hopeful that we will have a Ministry of Education representative there to answer any questions you may have as well as our project manager and cultural advisor. Following the community presentation will be the hangi at approx 6:15pm.
On the functionality side of things, we need 12 hessian sacks and about a trailer-load of soil (not rocky/stoney at all - closer to top soil).
For those who do not wish to eat any meat, the vegetables are cooked on the top of the hangi, separate from the meat in foil trays.
Our senior students will be a part of the whole process.
Recipe book:
This term Ruru students will be compiling a "tried and tested" recipe book to fundraise for camp in Term 4. Please could parents send their favourite family recipe to the office by the 7th August.
We would like to ask for the following recipes from the following whānau groups:
Piwakawaka - Starters/light meals
Kōhanga - Desserts/Slices
Ruru - Main meals
Winter Tournament
This year's Winter Tournament for Year's 3-6 is being held on Tuesday 4 August.
Rugby and Netball will be at the Darfield Domain.

Malvern Cross Country Thank you to the families who have advised their child/ren will be participating in the Malvern Cross Country on Friday 31 July at the Hororata Domain.
Please note there is NO POSTPONEMENT for this event, it will go ahead rain or shine.
It will be up to you as parents to take your own child/ren along and to supervise your own child/ren throughout the event.

The playground area/Tennis Pavilion are strictly out of bounds at all times, for all school students.
Assembly
We look forward to seeing you at our first assembly next Wednesday. It will be hosted by Ruru at 2:30pm in Korimako.
Metal Shelving
We are currently looking for metal shelving that we can put in the bus shed. If you or someone you know has shelving you no longer require, we would love to see a photo of what is available.
Skiing
Please note there will be no skiing on Tuesday 4 August due to the Winter Tournament being on. The 4th August skiing afternoon will be replaced with Tuesday 1 September.
PTA
Thanks to everyone who attended last nights PTA AGM. It was a great turnout and we are looking forward to working with our new team.
A huge thank you to Leanne Johnson for a whopping 13 years service to our PTA. Leanne stepped down as our president and we know we have big shoes to fill.
More information to come.
Around The School This Week!
This week in Ruru we did a guided drawing of a wild pig which linked to the story that we have been learning "Three Wild Boar". Students then unpacked what a cinquain poem was and independently wrote one describing a wild pig.
This week in Kohanga we have started our Term 3 unit on Minibeasts. Amy and Harvey kicked off the unit by looking at one very interesting (but rather unpleasant!) insect... the cockroach! We looked at the difference between facts and opinions and then they had a go at writing some facts and opinions about the cockroach. Great writing!
Piwakawaka love it when it is time to read with their buddies each day. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our tuakana - teina relationships to grow.
