Community-Driven Health Equity Action Plans

As part of its Culture of Health Program, earlier this year the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) released a model for developing Community-Driven Health Equity Action Plans, as well as Community-Driven Health Equity Action Plans developed by groups from across the country with facilitation from the NAM.

The model and completed plans are intended to serve as resources for communities as well as state and national organizers interested in advancing health equity at the community level. The model was developed based on learnings from communities promoting health equity and scientific evidence from reports from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

While released before COVID-19, advancing health equity remains critical to eliminating health disparities and improving health outcomes across the United States, and this work driven by communities is relevant now more than ever in the context of the pandemic and the increasing national dialogue around racial injustice and structural racism. The model ultimately aims to support community driven-solutions to improve health and health equity, during COVID-19 and beyond.

COVID-19 and Black Communities: A Workshop

Members of the Roundtable on Black Men and Black Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine and guest experts discussed ways to fully invest in the human capital available in Black communities by training doctors, engineers, and scientists who are then well-positioned to provide rapid and effective responses to subsequent waves of COVID-19 and other medical crises. The recording is now available.

Health Equity Resources During COVID-19
Disproportionate outcomes for people of color related to COVID-19 most recently illuminate the structural barriers to good health faced by our nation’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations. The realities of systemic bias and structural racism that give rise to inequities have health consequences for individuals and communities across the United States and on the well-being of our society.

The Culture of Health Program has compiled a list of resources on health equity in the context of COVID-19, which will continue to be updated.

Resources on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Across the nation, Americans are calling for action to end police brutality and longstanding racial injustice in the midst of a global pandemic that is disproportionately impacting minorities and other vulnerable communities the hardest. Research in social science, medicine, and other fields can shed light on the factors that drive systemic racial inequities — not only in society at large, but also within the sciences, engineering, and medicine — with the goal of finding solutions based on evidence. A range of studies, webinars, and other activities at the National Academies have explored this research, some of which are highlighted here.
