July 22nd Horticulture Update:
Gleaning with Meaning

This week, we are focusing on all the ways that CCE Offices are supporting food access at this time through gleaning from community and home gardens, to give you inspiration on ways to grow it forward as you harvest your fruits and vegetables this summer with volunteers!

Harvest Share Tables are a Great Way to Share your Garden Bounty - by Barb Neal, CCE Tioga County

A few years ago, the first two Harvest Share tables were built and set out in Tioga County.  They have been such a great success, that two more have been added.  What are Harvest Share tables?  They are a way for gardeners with extra produce from their gardens to share with folks who could use some more fresh, healthy food.  Got extra squash?  Leave it on one of the tables.  Need some vegetables?  Take what you need.  There is no income restriction to taking the vegetables—think of it as a way to share your bounty in a neighborly way. No need to wait for a pantry to open—the vegetables are available 24/7.

The original Harvest Share tables are located at Tioga Rural Ministry in Owego, NY (143 North Ave, Owego, NY 13827) and at the Lions Club community garden at the Inspire building in Spencer (57 E Tioga St, Spencer, NY 14883).

The new Harvest Share tables are located at CommonGround Christian Community Center (28 West Main Street, Owego, NY) and the Northern Tioga Center for Family Health (13293 State Route 38, Richford, NY). The CommonGround share table was built by Audra McFarland as part of her Girl Scout Gold project, with assistance from her uncle, Ken Birdsall.

Vegetable Varieties Trial Garden Programs in Wayne and Albany Counties Lead the Way with Donations to Food Banks -
by Laurie VanNostrand & Carole Henry

CCE Wayne is donating excess produce from the VVT garden and MGV home gardens to local food pantries and soup kitchens - this is our Grow and Share project. One of the MGV volunteers is tracking our donations so we can see what our combined total donations were at the end of the season.

Our volunteers are also liaisons to community/school gardens we are working with. They are the face of CCE at these gardens. Since Covid-19 we have been supporting the gardens remotely. One of our sites has a lot of low income families that receive produce from the garden.

In Albany county, CCE has paired up with the Hilltown food pantry in the Heldebergs which is a small rural pantry and does not receive a lot from the regional food bank.  The need is great this year they decided that all the produce from the Vegetable Variety Trial Garden beds and the additional 8 beds would go to them plus herbs from our culinary herb garden.  The Master Gardeners harvest on Mondays and we encourage MG’s and CCE staff to donate extra from their personal gardens.  We have a staff person who then drops it off to the Pantry Coordinator.   We even had a staff person who brought eggs to donate from her farm.

Laurie VanNostrand, the project lead working with this program, has been encouraging VVTG sites to take the extra seeds provided generously by Harris Seeds to grow additional plants and donate to food banks in your counties!  Please consider this at this time.

Seed to Supper Goes Virtual

We are excited that several of our Seed to Supper sites have gone virtual during the Pandemic, including CCE Erie and CCE Tompkins, to meet the needs of new gardeners with low-budget solutions.  Lessons are being recorded, and one-on-one consultations with families by Zoom, phone and Facebook have all made the program accessible at this time.

The Cornell Garden-Based Learning Program has also provided garden educator training virtually to new sites through the state, and will be gearing up for a fall course with Cornell students, engaging them in projects like grant writing, virtual garden educator preparation focused on our northern and capital region communities, and improving resources for Spanish speakers.  Want to learn more?  Visit our Seed to Supper Office Hours on the following dates:
