2020-21 Season Fundraising

Last month, we announced our plans to begin our new creation in August of 2020. In the interest of prioritizing the health and safety of our company, we have made the difficult decision to work virtually for the rest of 2020. We are continuing to plan for in-person creation in 2021, which means we still have an immediate need for financial support! We know that this is a difficult time financially for many of us; however, without donations from our community, this project will not become a reality. Many of you have consistently supported us throughout the years, and if you are able, we hope that you are willing to do so once more.

This new creation is particularly relevant to the current state of our country, an essential message for these times. Read more about the new work below...

Rhythmic Identity (working title) is a double bill that comprises two 30 minute works: Expressions in the root of and, Inform (ed). Rhythmic Identity celebrates the both/ands of one's lineage, instead of exploring the contrasting differences.

Rhythmic Identity grooves through:
BOTH a rise AND fall of a body,
BOTH a straight AND supple spine,
BOTH a relaxed AND rooted posture,
BOTH percussive AND sustained movement, and
BOTH urban AND traditional forms.

The vibrations and sounds generated from music connect humans at a profound level as rhythms can heal and bring communities together during times of sadness, grief, love, and joy. Rhythms connect us deeply and play a vital role in enhancing peaceful connections amongst diverse communities. It helps us co-exist! Rhythmic Identity takes action with a peaceful heart yet firm intention!

— Peter Chu

We are so grateful to you all for supporting us in big and small ways. Even a donation of $10 can make a huge difference. We also invite you to share this message widely with anyone who may connect to the mission of chuthis.

Recap: chuthis. Movement Intensive 2-day Virtual Experience

We were heartbroken when we made the difficult choice to cancel this summer's edition of chuthis. Movement Intensive due to COVID-19.  After many long conversations about how to move forward while best living up to the mission of CTMI, we decided to offer all 2020 Applicants a 2-day Virtual Experience on Zoom.

We had 45 dancers join us from all over the country for two days of classes with Peter Chu, Jenni Gordon, Krystal Matsuyama-Tsai, Rob Tsai, and Roger Van der Poel. With most of us connecting from our living rooms, bedrooms, or kitchens, we offered classes in Dance Prehab, Ballet, chuthis. Ideas, and chuthis. Repertoire, in addition to time at the end of each day spent in discussion. It truly was a beautiful experience, and this is a testament to the caliber of dancers who joined us.

Thank you to each and every person who participated in CTMI 2020—you gave us inspiration in the midst of this uncertainty! We hope to be back to normal next year, and it will be more special than ever.

Introducing Sloan Pearson

We are thrilled to welcome dancer Sloan Pearson to chuthis. for our upcoming creation! Sloan is an incredible mover with a huge heart, and we are honored to have her with us. Read more about Sloan below.

Sloan is a dancer, dance teacher, and model currently based in New York City. She is originally from Charlotte, NC, where she began studying dance at Charlotte Ballet under the direction of ballet luminaries Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride. Simultaneously, she continued dancing at her performing arts middle and highschool, Northwest School of the Arts. During her senior year her mentors introduced her to alum from Point Park University which locked her sights on continuing her education in their Conservatory of Performing Arts. With a focus in Modern Dance, she graduated in 2016 with her Bachelor of Fine Arts. While in school Sloan was offered an apprenticeship with the August Wilson Dance Ensemble.

Sloan went on to dance with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Kybele Dance Theater, Debbie Allen, and shortly after her time in LA she was honored to take a position with the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company making her Paul Taylor’s last chosen dancer. During her three seasons she has worked with Ron K. Brown, Larry Keigwen, and most recently Peter Chu. Sloan is very excited to continue creating and researching movement origins with chuthis.!

Welcome to the chuthis. family, Sloan!
