National Tree Day - August 2nd

National Tree Day is happening across Australia on the 2nd of August. This is the day where we come together as a nation and plant trees for the good of our planet.

By planting trees, we can take real action towards improving our planet - creating habitat for wildlife, improving biodiversity, reducing erosion, protecting water catchment areas and soaking up atmospheric carbon.

Check with your local council, Landcare group or other environmental group to see where they are holding their National Tree Day event this year.

Remember to bring your own gloves, water bottle and a clean trowel for digging if you have one.

Checkout the event listings below.

Making the most of our solar energy (even if you don't have solar panels!)

Can you help WA transition to renewable energy?
Even if you don't have solar panels?
You sure can!

Western Australia has some of the best renewable energy resources in the world, and many households are taking advantage of the clean affordable energy rooftop solar provides.

Our abundant sunshine gives us a world-leading solar resource and our rooftop panels are now the largest source of energy on the grid – about 4 times the size of the largest traditional generator.

However, to make the most of this, we need to use more electricity when the sun is shining, shifting those activities that we can into the daylight hours. We can also use these emerging technologies to make solar a dynamic part of our power system.

Young Re-inventor of the Year ideas

Growing your own gourmet mushrooms may sound like a crazy idea, but it is a fun way to add delicious and nutritious funghi to your diet. There are also lots of great ways to re-invent waste items such as old buckets, washing baskets and other containers to grow your mushrooms in. Mushrooms can even grow on waste items such as as cardboard and paper, straw or coffee grounds.

Checkout this cool guide to growing mushrooms from Gardening Australia.

The 2020 Young Re-inventor of the Year theme is Future Food!

The food we eat has many environmental impacts, from the greenhouse gas emissions associated with farming and shipping, to plastic packaging and wasting uneaten food. How we grow, eat and dispose of food waste will need to be very different in the future if we are going to look after our environment and conserve this precious resource.

We have also compiled some project ideas and home school resources here
