Running News

July 2020

Hello, Runners,

As we near the end of July, I think about what it usually brings our club: stories of heroic efforts and shennanigans from a local relay race (Wild Rogue, Barrel2Keg, Cascade Crest, or Hood to Coast), new personal bests in track events that you haven't done in years (HOTV All-Comers Meets), and gearing up for the fall races (Fall Festival Run, Condor 25k, Mac15k, Silver Falls).  This year, may you be finding new ways to bring comraderie and friendly competition into your lives.

Here are a few links to light the spark.  Tracksmith is launching a creatives in running fellowship to "elevate the sport, drive conversation and empower new perspectives."  Strength training you can do at home.  The Historical Whiteness of Running (NPR's Code Switch). And the passing of an unknown running star. Could any of our young runners give her a run for her money?

When we can finally return to our usual, I'll be interested to hear your thoughts.

The Results are In!

Thank you to everyone who ran the 2020 Virtual Run for the Hills. Through the generosity of the sponsors and participants, we collectively donated over $5000 to the Greenbelt Trails Fund! That is enough for 800 feet of new trail, or ten trail culverts, or 2.5 miles of gravel!

Check out the results to see who topped this year's leaderboards!

If you reported your results, and made at least a $20 donation to the GBLT Trails Fund, but did not yet get your race shirt, email hotvrunners@gmail.com

Membership Matters:
Community Running Grants

Did you know that in addition to all of the perks of the HOTV club, your membership dues contribute to our club's ability to support local youth running initiatives?

One of our winter 2020 awards went to the Dream Big Marathon  at Adams Elementary School. To reach the Dream Big goal, students must run/walk 26 miles, read 26 books, and perform 26 acts of kindness. Our HOTV grant funds purchased medals for students who complete the challenge. As of June, six students had already reached the Dream Big Goal despite only having one week to introduce it in school before the schools closed in March!

As we head into the next school year, we'll be starting another grant cycle.  Do you know of any schools or non-profit organizations who could use some support to promote an active lifestyle?  Send them our way: hotvrunners@gmail.com.

Remember to renew your annual membershp so that we can continue supporting our local community!

Trail Talk

Stay up-to-date on the Mac-Dunn forest news via the College of Forestry website.

There have been multiple car breakins at trailheads over the last few months. Here's some key information from the Forestry website:

The best ways to avoid a "smash and grab" are to
  1. Leave your valuables at home,
  2. Put them in your trunk BEFORE you arrive at your destination,
  3. Take them with you when you leave your vehicle, and
  4. Lock your doors and arm your car's security system.

Don't just cover up your valuables with a jacket or blanket. Commonly stolen items include GPS devices, radios, bags and purses, phones, keys, wallets, and even loose change.
