IOBC-WPRS Bulletin Vol. 151, 2020

Proceedings of the First International Congress on Biological and Integrated Control in Algeria (CILBIA1) at Batna (Algeria), 04 - 06 February, 2019.

The meeting gathered about 300 participants from Algeria, France, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali and Cameroon. A total of 72 oral and 208 poster presentations were given on topics such as biological control as a means of preserving biodiversity, bio-ecological knowledge and assessment of harms caused by plant diseases, weeds and insect pests/disease vectors in agrosystems, forests and urban environments (human health).

The CILBIA1 meeting was organized by the scientific association “Biology, Biodiversity and Sustainability” (BBD; University Batna 2, Algeria) and the “International Organization of Biological and Integrated Control” (IOBC-WPRS). This symposium is the first major meeting of researchers involved in biological control in Algeria.

During this meeting, 5 plenary conferences were scheduled and focused on the current status and prospects of biological control work in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and across the world. In the oral and poster sessions, participants presented studies that focused on biological control as a means of pest management (pathogens, pests and insect vectors of human and plant diseases). The work was mainly focused on approaches using microorganisms, parasitoids and plant extracts. Studies also concerned the knowledge of pests threatening strategic crops.
At the symposium’s closing ceremony, recommendations were presented, emphasizing the importance of the development of biocontrol as a means of pest management in Algeria as well as the constitution of a biological control network gathering the skills and resource persons in Algeria. A post-conference excursion was organized in the Aurès region with a traditional lunch served in a typically “Chaoui” house of the Ghoufi region.
