Strong Families, Children and Teachers

The Harbor School Houston assists at-risk children and families navigate toward a strong future by providing high quality early childhood education in a Christian environment.

Meet Our Director - Lorie Janish

Lorie Janish joined The Harbor School as Director of our St. Thomas Center in January 2020.

Lorie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from LeTourneau University. She comes to us from The YMCA, where she worked with children and youth for over 30 years in Teen, After School, Day Camp and Preschool programming. Twenty-five of those years were spent as a program administrator where she supervised multiple children and youth programs on a daily basis. Lorie has a passion for working with kids to build character and to instill a love for lifelong learning in a caring community for the development of the whole child.  She has hit the ground running, and we are so excited to have her!

Construction and COVID Updates

At long last, the construction process is complete, and we have received our Certificate of Occupancy for The Harbor School!  We are awaiting one final inspection, and then we will be able to move forward with submitting our licensing application.

Like nearly all of you, we have had to make adjustments due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which included the temporary closing of the St. Thomas campus.  Fortunately, Lorie has been able to work remotely and still coordinate our construction process.  She has also been working closely with our Board to finalize staffing plans, our parent handbook, staff training materials and many other documents needed to obtain our license and begin accepting children into our program.

Lorie and the Board are also focused on updating our policies and procedures to incorporate the current regulations governing the operation of childcare facilities during the pandemic.  The health and safety of our children and staff, as always, are of utmost importance to us.

As our economy continues to re-open, The Harbor School is moving into position to support the at-risk families in our community returning to work or school by providing them with high quality childcare.  At this point, we are targeting - and are working hard toward - an opening in September 2020.  Stay tuned for more updates, or check in at our website or Facebook page.

A Special Note

In the last several months, our lives have been affected not only by COVID-19, but also by the social unrest that has swept through our nation.  As we prepare to open, The Harbor School, as always, plans to welcome children of all races, colors, and national and ethnic origin.  We believe that classroom diversity will enrich the learning experience and make all of our students stronger and more empathetic to others.  We also believe that, by doing so, diversity at the early education level can play a key role in building future unity and equality in our nation.
