ISAPP Newsletter – July 19, 2020

As an organization, ISAPP aims to spur innovation in probiotic and prebiotic science and to envision the future of the field. This is made possible, in part, by new community members and diverse perspectives: for example, the expertise of new board members as well as the views of ISAPP students and fellows. ISAPP is pleased to highlight some perspectives from these groups in this July newsletter.

We share a newly published paper that emerged from Students and Fellows Association (SFA) discussions at the ISAPP 2019 annual meeting in Antwerp, Belgium. We then share the first blog post from our new board member, Dr. Kelly Swanson.

Also in this newsletter is the ISAPP response to a recent 60 Minutes media segment on probiotics; a summary of a trial that did not find any benefit of a two-strain probiotic combination for reducing antibiotic use in elderly adults in care homes; and a brief history of Bulgarian yogurt from ISAPP blog contributor Dr. Mariya Petrova.

Early career researchers discuss the future of probiotics and prebiotics in the first ISAPP-SFA paper

The ISAPP Students and Fellows Association (SFA), established in 2009, is part of what makes ISAPP a vibrant, forward-looking organization. This blog post highlights a paper on the future of probiotic and prebiotic science that was co-written by ISAPP SFA members and former SFA liaison, Prof. Gregor Reid, from discussions at the 2019 annual meeting.

Are prebiotics good for dogs and cats? An animal gut health expert explains

In his first blog post for ISAPP, new board member Prof. Kelly Swanson tackles a topic that’s growing in popularity: prebiotics for cats and dogs. The post covers potential health benefits of prebiotic ingredients, the types of animals that might benefit most, and the research that’s still underway in this area.

60 Minutes’ 13 minutes on probiotics

Here, ISAPP Executive Science Officer Dr. Mary Ellen Sanders responds to a recent CBS News’ 60 Minutes media segment on the gut microbiota and probiotics. The post clarifies what evidence exists for probiotic efficacy and what the true safety standard is for generally recognized as safe (GRAS) probiotics.

GG + BB-12 don’t reduce antibiotic use in an elderly, institutionalized population

Newly published studies help demonstrate which probiotics are appropriate for which populations. Read here about a recent randomized, controlled study showing that a combination of L. rhamnosus GG and B. animalis subsp lactis BB-12 did not reduce antibiotic use in elderly adults in a care home setting.

Bulgarian yogurt: An old tradition, alive and well

Bulgarian yogurt: An old tradition, alive and well

This blog post by Dr. Mariya Petrova is a personal take on the history of Bulgarian yogurt, explaining the origins of its scientific study and how yogurt-making remains an important family tradition in Bulgarian households to this day. See here for how to make homemade yogurt and how to use it in two traditional Bulgarian recipes.
