Nick (@nickmaffei7674) wrangled me into the knife world bit by bit over the last 11 years. Aside from kitchen knives, he initially gave me a Spyderco Ladybug to carry on my keychain―dyed with a custom ‘Nick Maffei fade’ by him and our daughter. Once he began his ‘skinnying’ of the Spyderco Para3 knives, I became his QC assistant (and sometimes I did send Nick and scales back to the belt sander!). I was so proud of his finished products−knives, guns, cooking, or otherwise. He was a true master, and I learned many valuable life skills from him.

Nick’s sudden passing at the end of January created such a void here in the house that I didn’t quite know how or where to direct my activity. Since I had absorbed a bit of ‘knife knowledge’ over the years, some of Nick’s close friends encouraged me to create my own knife Instagram page. Initially, I had meant to post just a picture of two of Nick’s knives each day, but it soon became a way of journaling our family’s trek through the grieving process. It has been cathartic to write and to make some new friends along the way.

With the support of many over these past six months, we’ve been able to fulfill our deck renovation project that Nick and I had hoped to complete this summer (our famous deck!). I’d like to say publicly that we thank and cherish everyone for their help in making that happen. On another note, this pandemic has opened a door for me to pursue an online degree in order to work in the nutrition field. Since Nick and I worked at the same company, he would often fight for me to get ahead in my job, and he expressed his confidence in my work daily; that being said, I know that he undoubtedly made possible this college/career opportunity in some way, so I hope to make him proud even from above.

a Podcast is Born!

Started in 2017, the Knife Nuts Podcast dives deep into the very best (and worst) that the knife com-munity has to offer. Friends Levon, Jake, Dave, and Brian got together after realizing that the long con-versations they had about knives might just hold some interest to the knife community at large. That became the genesis of the podcast that is now available on several platforms, including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, YouTube, and anywhere you listen to podcasts. Each episode offers up some humor, some knowledge, a bit of opinion, and a look at what is going on in the knife world today.

Self-described fanatics, Levon's interests in knives, cars, guns, and watches leaves him somewhere between 007 and Larry the Cable Guy. Brian, a custom knifemaker who creates knives under the brand Sharp By Design, has just released another line of production knives and is hard at work in his shop, while Jake is currently constructing a workshop in his basement on the path to becoming a full-time knife maker. Dave, after many years of collecting folders, is finally branching out and trying out more fixed blades and kitchen knives.

The Knife Nuts have just released their 4th “KNP Edition” knife, an exclusive variant of Brian’s Evo Ty-phoon knife with hand-rubbed M390 blades and Purple Alutex inlays. These knives are very limited runs that feature premium materials and finishes not seen on production knives and sell out quickly.

So, if you’re feeling a little Knife Nutty we recommend you stop by and give a listen!

As a side note, currently all knife nuts tee shirt profits are being donated to knifemaker Robert Carter’s recovery.

So this one time, my good friends Curt Gowdy and Jim McKay had invited me on a wildlife rescue mission deep in the heart of Nepal. Our mission was too locate and radio tag the endangered European swallow. This brute of bird is the largest of the Hirundinidae family, with the average female (hen) weighing in at a rather hefty 11 pounds, while the smaller males (known as cobs) generally weigh around three quarters of a pound. As a result of this size disparity, the males of this species have a reputation for being thoroughly intimidated by their mates, and as such served as the basis for the ancient Indo-European term “heanus pekt” or “henpecked” in modern parlance. While the various species of swallows are generally known as agile and quick fliers, these large females are still capable of a modest velocity of 24 mph when unladen (the European not the African).

It is their unusual nesting characteristics that are largely responsible for their rarity. Making their nests under suspension foot bridges, they dangle precipitously by their talons from the crevices between the floor boards. This requires them to balance their eggs on their backsides, with many being lost when egg care is transferred between the males and females. This peculiar trait has, however, led to the development of remarkably strong feet. So much so, that the females are capable of crushing a human skull.

With this in mind, we approached the bridge stealthily on skis. Unfortunately Jim had never mastered the art of skiing, and as we approached the edge of the ravine, he ramped right over the edge and into space. Flailing and swearing, he disappeared hundreds of feet into the valley below. Though his cries for help were incessant, there was little we could do for our friend. Curt and I vowed we would not let the agony of this defeat interfere with our commitment to the mission. And so, though Curt’s fear of heights is nearly paralyzing, I bravely selected him to traverse the bridge to our quarry. Crawling on his belly,
Opinel No.12 Explore in his teeth for defense, he slowly worked his way out onto the bridge until he was within arms reach of the female. His job was to grab her feet, as the tranquilizer dart that I was preparing to fire, took effect. Laying down my sandwich and raising the gun to my good eye, I took aim and fired. To my chagrin, Curt had failed to mention the smaller male was directly in line with my target. The dart penetrated the diminutive male completely, exploding him and leaving nothing but a cluster of feathers hanging in the air. Fortunately the dart continued on and hit its mark. Curt, lunging forward, wedged his arms between the floor boards and grabbed the females feet just as consciousness faded. It was rather comical when he realized she was far to big to pull up through the gap in the floorboards. While he pondered his dilema, I jotted a brief note using my REC Tuffwriter Mini Click asking that he bring back some feathers from the male for my hat and left him to his work.

While Kurt finished up with the female, I began the miles long hike down into the valley to recover Jim’s body. Finding him would not come soon enough, as his petulant whining was beginning to take its toll on my nerves. Once I found him, I would take half, leaving Kurt to retrieve the rest the following day. This would ease our burden as we trekked back to civilization and... wait, what...what?

Fine, just forget it.
