RIP Vincent

August 2020 e-news

With sadness, we lost a loving and humble servant last week. Vincent Gee was not only a dedicated servant but he was a good friend to everyone he met. Vincent loved driving the food van for us and served those who lived on the street with love and gentleness. We recently spoke to Vincent's dad in New York and he told us that Vincent had a tough life but at the age of 18, he decided to move to California to start a new life. When we first met Vincent, he was living in his car and we were able to help him get into housing. Once Vincent was housed we watched him take off working and doing a lot of different things like caregiving to support himself. We feel so blessed that he was in our life and now we can rest assured that he is with our Lord and that we will see him again one day. RIP Vincent, you will be missed. ❤️

August 2020

You know, for the most part, being the Gate Guy doesn’t hold many surprises. I show up, do my job, and go home.  Sometimes it’s even easier than that, other times, not so much, but overall it’s exactly like I said – not a whole lot of surprises. So I was pretty blown away last week by an act of kindness shown to me out of the blue.

I didn’t ask his permission to tell this story, so I’m gonna change his name to Jake on the off chance he’d be annoyed by me telling it. I honestly don’t think he would, but why take chances?

So I was doing my thing, letting folks in one at a time for food on Monday, when I see Jake. I’m always glad to see him, and I worry when I don’t, so this was a good thing. When we had his order ready, I motioned him in to grab his stuff, and he hands me an envelope with my name on it. Inside there was a card, and I’m paraphrasing here, but it said that although my job is a thankless one, he notices and appreciates what I do. He had written a small personal note inside, and given me his phone number, should I ever need or want to talk.

It hit me right in the "feels".

I’m no more important than the next person, but I’ve had a rough couple of months, and that one small act of kindness really lit me up. It was pretty awesome to be told I’m appreciated out of the blue, and it made me feel really good. I’m afraid that the human language doesn’t have a word for how good it really felt, and it came at the perfect time. I honestly didn’t know I needed it, but Jake knew, and he acted on it. To say I was blown away is an understatement.

It is experiences such as this that keep me so loyal to Street Life Ministries.

Many times I have tried to tell people about all the amazing things that happen in that lot at 1300 Middlefield. Most of the time, I don’t feel like I get that point across enough. I believe that the Lord Himself joins us there often. He shows Himself here and there through times when we didn’t think we have enough food, yet everyone is fed, to times where a single act of kindness re-opens the eyes of the Gate Guy.

I consider that lot Holy Ground. Every time I go there, I feel like I’m coming home, and if that doesn’t say it all, then I invite you to come down and see it for yourself. Experience a miracle of your own.

See you on the streets.
