January 2022 News From Autumn Farm

Dear Readers, the New Year 2022 began with the end of our Summer Camp Event December 27 to January 3, which was attended by eighty plus guys.
It was an auspicious beginning to a year full of hope and renewed aspirations.
Aside from one rainy day, the weather was superb this time, which made for a very happy- and very naked- camp.
Here are three impressions of Summer Camp.

1/ Pete Banham resident Chef.

Once again Summer Camp has come and gone with the attendance of wonderful guys. It was great to see the regular campers and other guests as well as some newbies. I enjoyed walking around the tent city conversing with the happy campers while I had time off from kitchen duties.
One thing I really enjoyed was performing in the New Year Show doing my impersonation of Gollum searching for his precious and doing the Bell Ringing Hunchback act, whose character has no arms, as well as telling a few jokes.

Volunteering at Summer Camp can be a bit daunting as many arrivals happen in a short period of time. Adding to the housekeeping tasks was the vaccine passport scan, which meant I couldn't be away for long when I had to be asking guests for their passports, though it was a good exercise to remember names and faces. I had some assistance from Keith who had another scan app with him.

Before starting my fourth Summer Camp I was already wishing it was over. Though this time I prepared myself for the arrival of the masses and the tents popping all around my shed and the subsequent cacophony of snoring sleeping beauties. There was the non anticipated drama that unfolded that put me off for a bit this time.

I was the running naked man during this event, being a very different situation the rest of the year, when I am mostly naked minus the running part. I also added kitchen help to my duties this summer, while Alex took over the Bath House work, which I think was appreciated not only by me.
Though, the highlight of the event was seeing you all going home, I did enjoy being the photographer at the colourful fashion show put on by the Daddy Camp crew.  Also, it was nice having conversations here and there with the guys who remained after the party nights, to relax and enjoy the quieter time in and around the swimming pool.

Despite everything, I hope to see most of you back at the end of this year. I should be around myself to welcome you and hopefully be free from scanning you on arrival.

I am always apprehensive before Summer Camp because its success or failure is an unknown quantity.
Our preparation for it occupies our energies up to the last minute and include; maintenance on the grounds done, the accommodation spaces set up, fridges cleaned and turned on, systems and staff scheduling finalised, Covid signs displayed and passport scanning organised, bookings checked and re-checked. Tick, tick, tick. Then we wait for the guests to arrive.
There are always so many variables in play as to its success, a major one being the weather.
We were blessed by classic summer sunshine during the camp, which ensured a happy crowd.
The Camp Daddies were instrumental in providing outrageous theatricals and we acknowledge a huge debt to them for creating a memorable holiday experience.
Another highlight was the Quiz Nite in which the whole Camp participated. I loved the inventiveness of Martin and David's approach to the evening.
Only days prior to Jan 1st, the traditional date for the Variety Show, I scrabbled together a short play called Polymorphously Perverse which duly premiered with the cast reading their lines from handheld scripts since we hadn't been able to do a rehearsal.
That and performance by Logan and Pete combined to be the night's entertainment.
I admit that during Camp there were times when I lectured, even yelled at, transgressors of our systems here, which are designed to reduce the carbon footprint of our existence, but mostly I just enjoyed the diverse nature of our Queer Community.
Thank you all for coming and helping to keep this place called Autumn Farm alive.
