FITNESS, HEALTH and WELLBEING

ALOPECIA DAY
August 1st is International Alopecia Day

Some of you would have noticed me around Halswell New World, Post Shop or out walking my dog or in the playgrounds with my son. I’m Bex and I’m a bald woman. I have Alopecia.

So what is Alopecia? It’s an autoimmune disorder – What occurs is that lymphocytes around the hair follicles release chemical messengers (called cytokines) that reject the hair for unknown reasons resulting in hair loss. It can be a small as a few patches on the head, to total hair loss for the entire body (Yes ladies' armpits & legs included! :)

For some like me who’s had it since the age 12 it’s just part of life, but for some, especially people who are just learning about it & coming to terms with Alopecia, it can be absolutely life-consuming!!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! If you need support or know anyone who is struggling please reach out there’s a conference in Palmerston North next year, for more info on that & other interesting details check out https://www.alopecianz.co.nz/ or https://www.facebook.com/NZAlopecia/

WOMEN'S HEALTH
Did you know:

Over 40% of NZ women will struggle with bladder weakness at some stage during their lives. A lot of women think it’s normal to wet yourself while exercising or sneezing after giving birth. It may be common but is not normal! Our pelvic floor is an area of muscle & like all muscles it can be strengthened. It is especially important to incorporate pelvic floor exercises into your daily routine post baby, it is vital to focus on this area if you’re wanting to get in to more vigorous exercise or you can cause yourself some serious damage not just discomfort from leakage.
Some simple exercises to help train from the NZ Ministry of Health:

Pelvic floor muscle exercises
You can do these exercises lying down, sitting or standing. With practice they can be done anywhere and at any time – even while you’re watching TV or feeding your baby.
·         Squeeze and draw in your back passage as if you’re stopping a fart.
·         Squeeze and tighten your vagina like you’re holding a tampon and your bladder as if you’re stopping yourself weeing.
·         Hold the squeeze for a few seconds – at first you may only be able to hold the squeeze for 1–2 seconds until your muscles get stronger. Later, try to count to 10.
·         Relax and then repeat about 5–10 times.
·         Keep breathing normally while you do these exercises. Make sure that you don’t pull in your stomach or squeeze your bottom when you squeeze – you will be using the wrong muscles if you do this.
It is as simple as that. Look after yourselves Mummas!  I highly recommend finding a fitness Class like Kangatraining or getting in contact with a Personal Trainer who has done training with Continence NZ to help keep you safe & strong while training. If you are having issues the team at Freedom Health have some wonderful womens Health Physios.

OLD MONEY
Launched in July 2010, Heads Up for Kids is a fundraiser you can help with.

Heads Up for Kids is an unique collection which asks New Zealanders to dig out and donate old decimal and pre-decimal New Zealand currency, and all foreign money.  The obsolete cash is then redeemed for New Zealand dollars and used to fund education programmes for young New Zealanders who would otherwise not get the opportunity.
You can drop off your old coins or foreign currency to Halswell New World or the Halswell Community Hub

Have some time to spare and want to help your community, while gaining skills and making new friends? Why not Volunteer for Citizens Advice Bureau Christchurch? We are looking for volunteers to join our friendly team in Hornby.
We work with clients by listening carefully, thoroughly researching the options available to them and by explaining the information in a way that they can use it. We also help people access information and services online or make complaints when needed. You will need excellent communications skills and be computer literate. On any given day, a volunteer working their shift might be approached about a whole range of questions, from tenancy rights, requests for directions, or needing documents signed by a Justice of the Peace, to helping somebody who has just been made redundant. Volunteers are fully supported with initial learning and ongoing development.
If you want to be part of great team then contact us at 0800 367 222 / 03 349 5236 or email manager.cabchch@gmail.com for more information or click on https://www.cab.org.nz/what-we-do/volunteer-for-cab/  Our next training course starts in September!

Interest has been strong and we are looking forward to celebrating bringing our community together for a fun night. A Silent Auction will be running throughout the evening thanks to the very generous support from our local Community businesses, Spot Prizes and some great entertainment.

Our Spring Community event with local entertainment, quality market stalls and displays by local people, Mike Pero Bouncy Castle, BBQ run by the Halswell Scouts and local “Coffee and Cruz” mobile coffee van on site is in the planning stage but will be on the evening of Friday September 25th.  Demonstrations and entertainment from local talent
and great community connection.  Mark it in your Diary 😊

Your Community Hall is run by a small group of volunteers who oversee the bookings and maintenance of this excellent Community facility.  It is owned by our Community and we always welcome any enquiries regarding bookings for functions or social activities.  At the Halswell Hall we offer a range of facilities with the main Hall having a capacity of 200. 2020 REFERENDUMS COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER
There are Two Referendums happening alongside this years General Election in September.
Both involve voting on new laws that have already been formulated.  To vote on this, it is important to go into the polling booth having thought about the issues and thinking about what will best represent your point of view.
In this newsletter, we are providing information from the Parliamentary Website that outlines what you are voting on for the End of Life Choice Referendum.   You can see it in more detail at https://www.referendums.govt.nz/
We provided information on the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Referendum in the last newsletter.

******
END OF LIFE CHOICE REFERENDUM
The referendum questionDo you support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force?
You can vote either:
Yes  I support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force, or
No I do not support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force.

About the End of Life Choice Act 2019
Parliament has passed the End of Life Choice Act. The Act will only come into force if more than 50% of voters in the referendum vote 'Yes'.

Who can ask for assisted dying?
The Act gives people with a terminal illness the option of requesting assisted dying.
To be able to ask for assisted dying, a person must meet ALL the following criteria. They must:
  • be aged 18 years or over
  • be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
  • suffer from a terminal illness that's likely to end their life within 6 months
  • have significant and ongoing decline in physical capability
  • experience unbearable suffering that cannot be eased
  • be able to make an informed decision about assisted dying.
A person would not be eligible to ask for assisted dying if the only reason they give is that they are suffering from a mental disorder or mental illness, or have a disability of any kind, or are of advanced age.

Who would be considered able to make an informed decision about assisted dying?
Under the Act, a person is able to make an informed decision about assisted dying if they can do ALL of the following things:
  • understand information about assisted dying
  • remember information about assisted dying in order to make the decision
  • use or weigh up information about assisted dying when making their decision
  • communicate their decision in some way.

Making sure the choice is freely made
The doctor must do their best to make sure that a person's choice to ask for assisted dying is their own.
If, at any time, the doctor or nurse practitioner thinks a person is being pressured about their decision, they must stop the process.
A health practitioner is not allowed to suggest that a person consider assisted dying when providing a health service to them.

The assisted dying process
  1. The process of assisted dying begins with the person asking their doctor.
  2. The person's doctor and an independent doctor must agree that the person meets all the criteria, which includes being able to make an informed decision about assisted dying.
  3. If either doctor is unsure of the person's ability to make that decision, a psychiatrist needs to assess the person. If a person is not eligible, they cannot receive assisted dying.
  4. If the person is eligible, they choose a method, date, and time for taking the medication.
  5. At the time the person has chosen to take the medication, the doctor or nurse practitioner must ask the person if they still choose to take the medication.
  6. If the person chooses to take it, the doctor or nurse practitioner gives it. The doctor or nurse practitioner must be available to the person until they die.
  7. If the person changes their mind, the medication must be taken away.

What happens after the votes are counted?
If more than 50% of people vote 'Yes' in the referendum, the End of Life Choice Act will come into force 12 months after the date the final votes are announced.
If more than 50% of people vote 'No' in the referendum, the End of Life Choice Act will not come into force.

You can read more about the Act here.
