YOUTUBE PICK OF THE WEEK

Lumiere and Company

Lumière and Company (original title: Lumière et compagnie) is a 1995 anthology film made in collaboration between 41 international film directors. The project consists of short films made by each of the filmmakers using the original Cinématographe camera invented by the Lumière brothers.

The shorts were edited in-camera and constrained by three rules:
  • A short may be no longer than 52 seconds
  • No synchronized sound
  • No more than three takes

ANNIE'S ALL4 PICK OF THE WEEK: DAPHNE

Our marketing manager, Annie, recommends Daphne (which we screened in 2017 with free tickets to anyone called Daphne!):

Daphne Vitale's life consists of a dead-end job, drinking and hook-ups. She offers us a female protagonist who is compelling to watch. Sexually liberated, independently minded, self-centered and deeply mistrustful of all shades of nonsense, she is a breath of fresh air; and she is not going to go quietly.
  • “Emily Beecham slays in a misanthropic British winner that feels like a big screen Fleabag” – IndieWire
  • “Beecham is terrific… A wisecracking wit who may just resemble women you actually know” ★★★★ – Time Out

THE LAST THURSDAY FILM CLUB PICKS...

Another intriguing and fascinating regular pick by The Last Thursday Film Club. Dr Reekie from the club suggests:

"I've never kept a diary myself and I've always regretted that the thrilling drama, complexity and deep existential wisdom of my life will be lost to the coming generations. Luckily, there are people like local filmmaker, and Electric Palace co-founder, Rebecca E. Marshall, who seem able to articulate their own intimate consciousness in a way that speaks for us all.

'And this IS IT, suddenly I feel REAL JOY because I’m surfing at the same speed as time, for one moment I’ve caught up, we’re all connected, and it’s truly tremendous.'"
