Dear Creative Community,

Paonia is opening up, and we are grateful for your safe participation! We have a lot to tell you about in this newsletter.
I am excited to be with you, as your new Executive Director. I have been at it for a month now, and the Creative Coalition has a lot of irons in the fire, with economic development through the Creative Industries as our highest priority. That means what we want most is to benefit you - our members and creative community.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Paonia opens it's doors, we encourage locals and visitors to support the unique stores and restaurants, and to enjoy an adventure in the beautiful North Fork Valley summer! While you experience our community, please keep us and yourselves safe by wearing one of our artist's masks, giving six feet of space, and purchasing one of many locally hand-made sanitizers. Stay safe, Shop Local!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Creatives' projects need to be seen! We've got some opportunities for you, including ways to display your creations and ways to get paid for your talent! You'll also find some potential funding, below, to assist creatives who are experiencing hardship because of COVID.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your membership expired since March, and the last few months have been financially difficult, we are offering extended memberships until September!
If you have had prosperity, however, we would also be grateful for your support. We are accepting donations and renewing memberships. Your contributions or renewal will help your community and fellow creators who need extra support right now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've been talking with some businesses, people in the community, and some of our members, and I'm learning what you want and what we can do to help. I'd like to hear your thoughts, so please let me know if you'd like to have a chat. I can be reached by e-mail, Facebook, or phone at (970)778-9072. I look forward to speaking with you!

Heidi Hudek, Executive Director

So many events have been cancelled this year, and the creative community has been deeply impacted by the loss of theses events. We think it's important to support our creative community, as Art & Ag Tour has done for the last two years. So we have some good news for you! Though it will be different, Art & Ag is still on this year!
We requested feedback last month to get your thoughts on holding Art & Ag this year. The majority of respondents asked us to continue to hold the event. However, there were some who weren't comfortable, particularly with having visitors in their studios and on their farms. We also think it's important to keep our community safe! So we are modifying the event this year.
We are collaborating with Paonia Small Business Council to provide a Saturday Street Market on September 5th! Grand Avenue will be closed, we will have street performers, booths will be distanced and face masks are required, and we invite business owners, artists and farmers to show their creations.
Don't worry, the building up of our economy doesn't stop there! Instead of promoting a large event and bringing visitors to us, we're giving rise to a ballyhoo! We are boosting Art & Ag participants, not just for a weekend, but in a two month sales party! We will share tutorials on how to create a compelling visual, then encourage you to share your story and a simple video with us. We will create a YouTube channel, boost individuals on Social Media, create a webpage just for Art & Ag participants, and link all of this directly to your online sales page.

If you are interested in having a booth or being a promotion participant,
e-mail for more information and a registration form. Deadline to sign up for a booth and/ or have your promotion materials to us is August 20th.

 Final Friday Frolics is also on! On July 31st Grand Avenue is open!

Paradise Theater presents Fri-Yay's! The Paradise Theatre is excited to announce that it has joined Friday Frolics with a new program; Creative Fri-Yays! Creative Fri-Yays is a free monthly lecture series that focuses on creativity. This month, a discussion with Paradise's own Sunshine Knight.

Then, Shrek starts at 7pm! Discussion and movie at 215 Grand Ave.

Seven Trees presents artist Raven Rohrig.

Raven Rohrig, a local fine artist, will be showing works from her ongoing series, “The Wisdom of Women,” from 5-7pm. Visitors will find a collection of Rohrig’s original paintings, limited edition prints, greeting cards, and new limited edition talisman pins.
Raven Rohrig, a Colorado-based artist, has been feverishly painting since 2014 with a skilled hand in capturing her subjects.  Rohrig’s inspiration comes from a childhood spent in her father’s studio and a desire to express her emotions through her art. Since becoming a full-time painter in 2016, Rohrig continues to hone her style as a contemporary portrait painter. With a wide-ranging color palette and a unique vision for portraiture, Rohrig’s work challenges the mainstream view of women as objects of simple pleasant beauty, presenting them as sovereign and sacred with deeper hidden stories.

Seven Trees carries organinc skin and body care, clothing, home goods, jewelry and accessories, and is located at 217 Grand Ave.

Call to Local Artists: Request for Artist Proposals

“Wild Home” Community Book

Creative Illustration Project

Request:  A collaborative community arts project seeks original illustrations for a one-of-kind book that serves as an artistic representation of the North Fork Valley’s struggle to protect its community and public lands from the ravishing impacts of oil and gas development, inspiration and guide to others.  This book is a collaboration between Notch Theatre company – producers of the Wild Home play, North Fork Valley Creative Coalition, and Citizens for a Healthy Community. The book will feature “Wild Home” theatre scripts, advocacy tools, maps and information about the North Fork Valley, reflections on social justice-driven theatre, and multi-media illustrations from artists in the community.

Intent: Produce a book with many authors and many illustrators. The intent is for this book to be special-- not one that simply sits on a bookshelf-- but lives in someone’s home or office as its own work of art.  The text will consist of theatre scripts (Wild Home plays), community reflections, information about the biological wealth and value of the North Fork Valley, information about socially-engaged theatre, and more. The purpose of the illustrations is to bring these words, chapters, and play scripts to life through visual art, and capture the hopes, fears and dreams of the community represented in each Wild Home play.

Goals of the project:

       Create a comprehensive, multidisciplinary creative arts expression project that connects the literary, visual, and performing arts around environmental justice and preservation of the North Fork Valley

       Celebrate the past, present and future process and possibilities of Wild Home

       Create a book that is both art and guide—a model for others both within and outside the North Fork Valley community

       Collaborative engagement, artistry, and fundraising for a shared cause

       Honor the role of artists in social and environmental change

       Time capsule, yet forward looking and timeless

Book outline:

       Introduction

       History and importance of social/environmental inspired theatre

       The Inspiration: Too Wild to Drill Report—North Fork Valley

       Wild Home Concept—Process—Community Interviews

       Wild Home Play Scripts

       Impact: Call to Action, presentations outside community, partnerships, citizens/people that were inspired to get involved—new activists

       Guerilla Theatre—plans for distribution/awareness/execution

       Conclusion

Submission Requirements:

We are looking for visual artists of all kinds who are interested in illustrating and creating artwork to visually represent the importance of protecting the North Fork Valley from extractive industries. Open to all mediums, forms, and styles that can be printed on a page.

We are calling for artists who live in the North Fork Valley, so others may be inspired through your passion for your home, and so we may stimulate the local artist economy.

If interested, email natasha@chc4you.org for a copy of the “Wild Home” script PDF.

We ask that interested artists submit the following:

       Sketch or a concept for one or more of the following

o   3-4 illustrations per Wild Home play

o   Given the content outlined in the table of contents, a different illustration or visual idea that inspires you

       The artist should own the overall artistic expression and reflection of each play or chapter. The proposal should reflect the artist’s interpretation of the visual expression needed, which may result in more than the minimum illustrations requested per chapter.

       Specs: The product will be 8.5 x 11 size, traditional book binding on thick heavy paper

Review Criteria:

       Artistic merit

       Interpretation of the plays

       Range of artistic expression

       Applicability to handmade paper printing materials

Honorarium: To honor each artist’s time, skills, and creativity an honorarium of $600 is available per illustrated play.

Deadline:  August 15, 2020
