On World Against Trafficking Day *, some updates & exciting news!

In our last newsletter, we gave you a quick tour of how Rebuild had started. Before lockdown, as well as the ongoing and invaluable Casework support, we had started running "Connect Sessions". These were for people to come along to and either be creative or just sit and have a cuppa and chat - to help with confidence and trust building, as well as a safe place to make friends with others.

One of the Connect sessions was a sewing group which our individuals had asked for, and which were loved by all who were involved. We learnt how to make lots of lovely, practical items, as well as it being a great time for friendship, sharing and sometimes just ‘being’, so when we had to go into lockdown, we all knew we would miss these sessions.

So, what have we been able to do during the COVID-19 lockdown? This time has been such a strange one. Some of our individuals have coped very well, others have struggled.

At the beginning of lockdown we made the decision to take our sewing group online and we loaned our sewing machines to those in that group. Anne has been making regular videos of sewing projects and we have been sending out the resources to take part. Projects have included shirt dresses to bags and everything in between. On that note, we could really benefit from some more sewing machines, therefore if anyone has a spare machine, fabric, or any other haberdashery items, or feels they can contribute in this area, then please let us know.

Along with the sewing group going online, we have had some zoom sessions and we have also been sending out regular care packages to those we support with food items, games, mental health resources, mindfulness activities. As well as care packages, Anna has done some wonderful videos to help with keeping minds positive and learning about how trauma can affect our brains.

During lockdown...

"I am a young lady from Albania and a resident in UK for three years and a half now. I joined Rebuild organisation last year and it has been a pleasure to meet such a great people as is Anna my support worker, Lesley ,Anne and couple volunteers worker. Ever since I meet them,they are found next to me ,not only physical and mentally. During the lockdown they have kept us through the zoom very active doing DIY things and sending us the material to work with. I am glad that I am part of Rebuild organisation."

We’re very excited to let you know that Rebuild East Midlands has been selected to participate in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 202

0, the UK’s largest match funding campaign.

Last year, thanks to generous supporters the campaign raised over £15 million for participating charities.

We will be aiming to raise vital funds to help us continue to provide face to face support for individuals who have experienced Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery in 2021. Donations to this project will be matched for 7 days from 12pm on 1^st December, #GivingTuesday.

One donation, twice the impact!

What happens during the Christmas Challenge?
Donations made to our project via theBigGive.org.uk will be doubled during the campaign. If you would like to support our work this year, we highly recommend doing so during the Christmas Challenge when your donation will be doubled and make even more of a difference to us.

What do I need to do?

Add a calendar reminder to your diary for 12pm on 1st December – we will send the campaign link nearer the time
Have your 3D secure card details ready when you make your donation.

Please note the donate button will appear on the campaign page when the Christmas Challenge launches at 12pm on 1st December.

Rebuild Training

Another aspect of our work during COVID has been delivering awareness raising sessions.

We developed three sessions in partnership with some of the individuals we support, to ensure the sessions were fit for purpose.
We delivered these for Just-Ice and Upbeat Communities staff and volunteers. These sessions were very well received and a number of other organisations have shown interest in them for the autumn.

We currently offer a three session package:

1 – An overview of Human Trafficking and Modern slavery: What it is, the UK situation, the NRM, the vulnerabilities surround exploitation and the impact.

2 – Psychological, Emotional and Physical impact of Human Trafficking: We discuss what trauma is, how it impacts the whole body, the brain and how it works, and how we can support recovery.

3 – Moving Forward: We explain how to support individuals of HTMS in a trauma informed way and help them rebuild a hope filled future, offering strategies to use to aid with flashbacks and trauma.

These sessions are about 50 minutes long and at the moment we are conducting them over Zoom.

We are also working on half day and full day training which allows participants to go deeper into issues.

We are growing!

Back in March we found out that we had been successful
in a funding bid from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to recruit a Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator.
This is an exciting role for the team, and we hope it will help to raise our profile
in the community and strengthen our network.
We will be introducing our team member in the next newsletter.
