Schools to remain closed until 2021
Having been hopeful just a couple of weeks ago of a return to the classroom in September for school children in Kenya, it has now been announced by the government that schools will not reopen in 2020.

The 2020 academic year has been declared "lost" due to Covid, with schools to remain closed until January 2021 and every year group to 'repeat' the year they were in when schools were closed back in March.

Our latest blog post looks at how this might affect our partner schools, their pupils and our work over the next few months.

Other news in brief

Long-standing headteacher retires

Our great friend, confidante and advocate, Nicholas Mutui, retired in May after more than 40 years dedicated service as a teacher in Kenya.

Nicholas has been headteacher of three of our partner schools during our time working in Kasigau, including our latest at Mkamenyi Primary, where he ends his long and distinguished career.

His retirement will be a great loss to the schools and to the wider community and, indeed, to AP but we are sure that he will continue to be a friend to the charity and we look forward to working with him in a new capacity in the future.

For now, we thank Nicholas for his support and service, and wish him a happy, peaceful (and stress-free!) retirement with his family.

Take on a challenge

My RideLondon

In place of the cancelled RideLondon, organisers are encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get on their bike over the weekend of 15/16 August to raise funds and keep the wheels of UK charities turning during these challenging times.

The My RideLondon event lets you set your own distance, your own mode of non-motorised, wheeled transport and your own route and is completely free to enter.

Thank you

We'd like to thank the following for their recent support and donations:

- the Geoff Herrington Foundation for a grant towards the redevelopment of our eighth partner school at Mkamenyi Primary;
- our sister charity
Kids4Kenya, Hazel's Footprints Trust, Meeting Needs and St James's Place Charitable Foundation for their grants towards our Covid response;

- the Trustees of The Karira Trust who have closed their charity and transferred their remaining funds to African Promise;
- our ambassadors,
David & Jenny Harkin, who raised almost £2,000 by running a combined total of 1,400km (the length of Great Britain) over 100 consecutive days during lockdown;
- pupils of
Oundle School for their donations in the Old Oundle Club Charity Challenge.

And finally...

Congratulations to our Project & Programmes Manager, Denis, who welcomed a new addition (little Angel) to his family earlier this month.
