The purpose of this paper is to review the barriers in the dissemination of effective smoking cessation treatments and services globally. Offering tobacco users help to stop using tobacco is a key demand reduction measure outlined under Article 14 of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Implementing Article 14 can reap great dividends for the billion plus tobacco users around the world and their families, friends and societies.

“Combustion is the issue, not nicotine,” said Philip Morris International Chief Executive Officer André Calantzopoulos while referring to the recent US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization to market IQOS as a Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) with reduced exposure claims. During a virtual press briefing held recently, Calantzopoulos said the US FDA “recognizes that better alternatives do exist because they are all non-combustibles. It articulates very clearly, combustion is the issue.”

A Growing Number of Australians Support Cannabis Legalisation

According to a recently published national survey, a growing proportion of Australians support the legalisation of recreational cannabis. The country’s National Drug Strategy Household Survey for 2019 also revealed that almost two-thirds of Australians would back the introduction of pill testing. The findings reflect a general trend towards more liberal drug control measures in the country.
