NEW SHORT STORY: BAD AIR AND BITTER HERBS
Well, here we are. Still in the midst of an historic and devastating pandemic. It's difficult to escape. Over the last couple of months, I've been distilling some my anxiety about COVID-19 into my fiction. The result is my first (and hopefully last) coronavirus-inspired short story, "Bad Air and Bitter Herbs," which was published by Creative Colloquy this week.
I started writing this story in late-April, when I was feeling acutely anxious. By the time I finished a couple rounds of edits and had it ready to submit for publication, it was mid-June. At that time, it felt like the first wave was almost over and we were on the cusp of resuming a semblance of normal life. I was worried that the story was no longer relevant; that those feelings had faded for most people.
Flash forward to this week, when cases of COVID-19 are spiking in many communities, and those same feelings of helplessness and paranoia and exhaustion are creeping back. Against that backdrop, I believe this story is perfect for today's climate of uncertainty. I hope you enjoy my twist on the pandemic:
